I'm really pushing my budget with this but I want to build a PC that won't require an upgrade for a good few years. It's purely for gaming, I want to run every high-end game that is available now and for the next two or even three years at maximum settings. Monitor is 1920 x 1200 and I'm sorted for a psu and ssd's.

Is there anything here where I can do better, maybe for a few quid less? No big deal if not, I reckon this is a pretty solid build.

I doubt you will notice a difference between 3000MHz Ram and 3200MHz Ram.

This saves another £15.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £83.69
(includes shipping: £8.70)

There is also this TeamGroup kit for £59.99 although it is a bit taller so it might interfere with the fan on the cooler depending on which ram slots you use. You could either move the fan up a bit if you have clearance from the side panel or use the 2nd and 4th slots.

Thanks for the suggestions all. Basically I don't want to budge in terms of downgrading on the original build.

It should have no problem running pretty much anything at max settings at the moment, yes/no?

Also agree may as well go for the i5-6600k if you're only gaming. Save yourself nearly £100.

At that res (and im guessing 60hz) you are going to be fine for considerable time :)

So the i7 *could* be wasted on me then?

I think I'll still go with it though, I have no intention of upgrading for at least five or so years so I need all the performance I can get.

The i7 will help on multithreaded games that have more than 4 threads. Ashes of the Singularity is the obvious example.

How many x16 slots are you going to need? You could save money if you decide you will only need two.

The GTX 1070 is complete overkill for 1200p 60Hz gaming. You might look at the 8 GB Radeon RX 480 or the imminent Geforce GTX 1060 and take the view that you will upgrade the GPU when you upgrade your monitor.

Not really. Even the 1080 can be justified for 1080p under the right circumstances.

I upgraded from a 970 to a 1070 and game at 1080p. The extra power really helps me tame the jaggies.

Not necessarily. Hyper-threading only helps if the core isn't running at 100%. It doesn't give you 2 cores, it just makes one core pretend to be 2. In a small number of cases, it can actually make things worse, as there is an additional overhead managing the split.

Think of it like taking a glass of water and turning it into 2 glasses. You can now double the number of people having a drink, but they only get half as much. 100% on a hyper-threaded CPU is the same processing power as 50% on a single core.

I've decided to hell with it. Can't really afford it and even if certain aspects are considered overkill (I certainly don't think so) I'll pull the trigger on it this weekend. Might have to change the 1070 model as stock is low but no biggie.

Should be quite an eye-opener after the past eight years with a 5850, core 2 duo and 4gb of ddr2 ram! Am probably going to spend the next week reinstalling older games that I couldn't max out instead of playing up to date titles like Doom :D

Enjoy!! I did pretty much the same thing 3 months ago, spent £1200 on a full new set up, and it still amazes me.
