All,

I'm building a gaming Rig for my friend, and he has a budget of £1000. He loves playing games but also does considerable video editing work.

I've selected the attached list of components for his rig, and would like a few thoughts on the selection of components.

Great value for money on the 480s atm.

Much better PSU, case is personal choice
Better SSD
Cheaper mobo, but this has good reviews, overclocks well, and is ideal for single GPU set ups.

reviews:

BTW, normally post spec requests in GH

128gb ssd and a 500gb storage it enough for most people!

but if he is going to be downloading tb of stuff he will need more...

I'd pick a different card than the 480 as well if you value your hearing :p

Have you ever even used a 480? This is the standard response ftom someone who has no clue and is just repeating what someone else has said

Yes they can be a little noisy when fully stressed but unless you sit there and run furmark all day then they are perfectly tolerable.

And i own one so i do know what im talking about ;)

Yes thanks I owned one last year, and promptly sold it due to the ridiculous levels of noise it produced ;) :p

On games that only use a portion of its power (like mass effect and the like that only pull about 20% of it's potential) yeah it's 'acceptable', but on games that give it a good thrashing (like Crysis 2, Battlefield 3 etc) the fan gets loud and annoying quickly.

Also, 'a little noisy' is a bit of an understatement for a 480 under stress. Hence every review puts the 480 right up at the top of its noise scale alongside other such beauties like the 4870X2 and 6990.

aye inclined to agree with HeX on this one, my mate Ryan owns a GTX 480 and it is noisy as hell when stressed, probably on par with my infinitely noisy 4870X2.

with that board one could go with something like a pair of 7750/7770, which perform right up there with higher-end single card solutions, way way less noisy and a ton less power consumption as well, just a thought.

tempted to go for a couple of 7770 myself personally and get shot of this insane noisy 4870X2, from what I have read Crossfire 7770 give ~GTX 580 performance for ~£220/240, or Crossfire 7750 giving not much below GTX 580 performance for ~£180/200.

Isn't the 6850 better and cheaper!?

Let the OP decide, if noise is something you're worried about, don't get the 480. Get a 560Ti or sli/crossfire (with an appropriate motherboard/PSU)

think in out right performance the 6850 edges it most of the time, though not at all by anything substantial, the biggest selling point for the 7750/7770 is performance / watt, 6850 performance for the most part, smaller package and lower temperatures and power consumption, price wise there isn't much between the 7770 and the 6850 again. but it was just an example, have been down the dual-midrange card route a couple of times myself and has worked a treat each time, first time was back in the 7600GT, then 8800GTS and in the not too distant future maybe two 7750/7770 or perhaps 'Kepler' equivalents.

the only problem with dual-GPU set-ups is the occasions where crossfire doesn't work, some games don't get any real noticeable boost in performance from it. though think the scaling of crossfire is fantastic nowadays, almost perfect in a lot of situations.

as long as you ain't someone easily annoyed by fan noise (must confess not a fan of it myself) then the GTX 480 is a fantastic card.

If the noise bothers you that much, you can always get one of those silly looking aftermarket coolers with about 5 low rpm fans on.

too true, guessing you mean the Arctic Cooling one? they appear to be rather hard to get hold of these days, also don't intend on having the 4870X2 for that much longer due to excessive noise, heat and power consumption, plus the obvious lack of DX11 support. :)

Ok, few changes to the spec I earlier posted,
1. I'm getting a better PSU maybe a Corsair, or a CM, or Antec
2. Like the choice of the Crucial M4 SSD, so that comes in
3. Case, my mate likes my CM 690 II a lot, hence the choice
4. GPU - Noise is an absolute No-No for my friend, and I've read great reviews everywhere for the 560Ti (Mainly CustomPC), and they're quite overclockable, & the GB one is quiet too.
5. HDD - fair advice, will switch to 500GB / 1TB
6. MOBO: I've always used ASUS and like their motherboards, never used Gigabyte. What about the Gigabytres boards suggested by beejjacobs, would they offer USB3, SATAIII, Bluetooth, good overclockers, etc? Also, in comparison, the ASUS board I've selected is PCI 3.0 ready, and can run two GPUs x8, whereas the GB one doesn't have PCI 3.0 Support, and runs 2 GPUs at x4. I know that currently we're going with a single GPU setup, but, future proof is better.

I can't offer advice on much else, but when it comes to HDD space, try and get at least 1.5 TB. Video files are huge, a 7D will fill 16gb in about half an hour, if your doing this on a regular basis your space disappears fast...
