Hi OCUK community,

So I have been doing a lot of reading around and researching but sadly this seems to only make my head hurt :D

I am after a gaming rig that will last a few years, play games with minimal fuss and of course be able to show me some pretty explosions; in game of course! :p

I am still clueless as to whether I should/shouldn't water cool and whether I should get two graphics cards, or whether there is even any scope in the budget for that. I am also pushed towards i7s rather than the i5s purely for scalability/future proofing although I could be wrong there too as the cost is substantially more.

Enough babbling; let's get to business:
  • Operating System - Not Required
  • Mouse/Keyboard - Not Required
  • Monitor not required (See last bullet point)
  • SSD - Preferred for OS, Adobe etc
  • HDD - Not sure if needed? I have a 750GB external if that'll be up to it?
  • Can you also recommend a decent monitor? I am thinking £200 should be enough of a budget for this (separate from the build).

Look forward to your replys. You guys are absolute demi-gods at putting these specs together!

Case is the compromise. The R9 290 is the best bang / buck card at the moment and the cooler on the Tri-X is very, very good (have one myself). The power supply has a frankly ridiculous 10 year warranty. You could save by removing the mechanical drive and spending the savings on a bigger 250gb SSD if you'd prefer.

Your budget for the monitor isn't enough to afford any of the decent 120hz/144hz gaming monitors. Pick a 24in that you like the look of and that comes with the longest on site warranty as at that price point they're all fairly similar.

Please don't take offense to this OP but i feel you will be quite a 'casual' gamer, in a sense. I feel you won't be bothered about upgrading until you actually need it. That is why i came up with this:

YOUR BASKET

It gives you all you need and nothing more (really). Its not set up for Xfire, its not got hyperthread but it will rifle through any game you send its way.

I also included an IPS screen for adobe work. :)

Many thanks for your advice gentlemen. I think I am really drawn to that first build so far and may drop the optical drive and put that towards the Ronin case. Everything else looks exceptional!

As for the monitor would you guys recommend pushing the boat out a little further and purchasing a 144Hz one? I had a look through and this seemed to be best value?

YOUR BASKET
1 x Iiyama Prolite GB2773HS-GB1 144Hz 27" Widescreen LED 1MS Monitor - Black £269.99
Total : £279.59 (includes shipping : £8.00).

144hz would be a great investment, but do you really need a 27" screen? People who have owned one previously have complained of issues with their eyesight after prolonged exposure over a number of weeks/months.

How close do you sit to the monitor?

I actually sit very close to my monitors, not good for my eyes I am sure but it helps me spot those snipers in the distance and tank turrets peering over crests :D

Would you recommend another monitor instead? From my limited knowledge it just appeared to be best value for money.

The monitor Doomed spec'd is a good one. If I were you I'd do some research before considering a 144hz screen. They are very good for high speed games but can suffer with colour reproduction issues
