£1000 Gaming Spec?

Hi guys, it's been a while since I built my first computer with the help from the OCUK community, and now I think it's time to build another.

I currently have the AMD 955, HD 5850, and 4 Gigs of ram and desperately need an upgrade.

I'm completely out of touch with the hardware available today. In fact, I'm probably about 3 years behind.

What type of gaming computer or spec can I expect from £1000?

I have a 1080p monitor that I would be happy to use, but I've been seeing 1440p monitors being mentioned a lot. If they are a worthy upgrade, then I reckon I will and upgrade in a few months. So the full budget would be spent on the PC.

I've got the OS already, as well as a mouse and keyboard. I can use the sound card and wireless NIC from my current computer.

I'm guessing Intel is the way to go for a CPU?

I hope to buy before the month is over. Or should I wait and see what else comes out towards the end of the year?

As always, I look forward to your responses.

Hi,

What sound card+NIC do you have?

Do you have any SATA drives or case that can be reused?

A month is actually a long time in the PC tech world, so come back then and the current offers and special prices etc can be used.

Intel is indeed the way to go and if you are happy with your current screen then keep that to and spend all the money on the new base unit.

You get free shipping
You could also lower the price by dropping to an i5 4690k, which would be excellent and still get good FPS in games, however I'd come back just when you're ready to order and someone can spec you, would be a better plan instead of choosing now and ordering in a few months as you said

Do you have a case currently? Which one?

Stulid... I guess you're still the genius around here?

As far as I remember, it's the DG 5.1 sound card. It's some type of Lynksys NIC, but would get a new one if needed; they're cheap enough.

I don't plan on reusing any SATA drives that I have.

October is nearly over, so I plan on buying soon.

Thanks for spec, Shivy. Is the SSD a necessity? I've never used a computer with one before, and quick start-up times isn't something I'm after.

Not having free shipping shouldn't be an issue.

I've ordered from OCUK before and was happy with the shipping charge.

Definitely an SSD is a necessity, everything is so much snappier, game load times, boot times (as you said), and the HDD would be used for mass storage on top of that SSD. Common combination loads of people use these days, media, files etc goes on HDD, games, applications and OS go on the SSD

Yes I am the genius.

Please check exactly which sound card it is, theres a DG, DGX etc, ditto the NIC.

SSD it is then.

It's the Asus Xonar DG 5.1.

I also dont plan on reusing the case, which I think is a Coolermaster Elite 430.

Also, I haven't had a need for an optical drive in the past few years, so I suppose we can skip that too.

PCI sound card so thats a pain.

If the NIC is PCI too then best to get a new one.

Windows can be installed via USB these days.

That's true :)

Edit: I'd be willing to get a new sound card if it's necessary. I'm a hobbiest sound technician... So it might matter.

Might be for the best, some boards do have a PCI slot still, but its not native (uses a 3rd party chip to convert PCI-E into PCI) and they are placed in such a way on some boards that they get in the way of doing SLI etc.

Perfect!

Thanks very much for your input guys. I think I'll go for the spec above.

I wouldn't.

I think you would be better of with a sound deadened case.

A noctua cooler such as the NH-U12S (inaudible)

And a black edition board.
