Does this look OK?, my mate was saying I'll probably get recommended the p45 as its better for crossfire, but i wont be using crossfire so this should be fine.

Also would a 300gb velociraptor make much difference to performance? and worth the price tag?

Thanks in advance :)

I have a velociraptor, its the shiz! I love how fast i can get vista to load off the thing.

But i really wouldnt get it over a few important things first,....

Right to improve your spec id invest in 4 gig of ram (2x 2gig sticks and pc6400 aka non sli branded ones as thats a waste of money)

Id also push for a 24" inch monitor (the OCUK ones arnt too bad from what i hear... but have a look in the monitors bit), to free up the cash for one id ditch the 9800 and get an ati 4870 for £170ish (as the 9800gx2 is old and power hungry...).

Finally id get a much cheaper p35 board (gigabyte ones are pretty good) if your not going for crossfire and dont want firewire/esata :)

id have a gx2 over a 4870 tbh there to hit and miss
get a p45 p5q (the cheapest one) or a pro if u want the extras
the lg dvd rw thats the cheapest in ocuk is silent there has been a few noisey nec ones
the cpu is oem so you will need a cpu cooler

Thanks for the response guys. Reason i went for the Abit IP35 is it seems a really popular board. Just picked the XE over the other as its not much more and would look better in my windowed case.

I think I'd rather stick to 22", if i go 24" surly I'd need to spend a fair bit more to get a monitor of similar quality to the 22" Ive chosen? Plus i think 22" should be a nice enough size as I'm used to a 19" CRT.

I had 4gb down but in 4x1gb sticks, would it be better in 2 x 2gb sticks then? Also if you could recommend some decent ram that would be great.

Is a 900 watt overkill for this rig?, thinking of saving a few quid and getting the 700 watt as i wont be going sli or crossfire ever.

This is what Ive come up with so far, comes in at under a grand with a few discounts ;). Should be better than my current rig which cost a lot more than a grand when i bought it .

I'll be ordering in a week or so so if theres anything worth changing i can do it before i order. Not 100% sure on the gfx card yet, I'll have to do a bit more research.

I can't see anything wrong with the above, unless of course you are wanting to overclock that lovely Q6600 (which I would recommend)?

you need a cpu cooler mate the oem doesnt have one

Up the cpu to the retail one. 3 year warrenty.
Swap the hdd for the 640gb one cause it is faster. Uses different platter size.
I would swap the gfx for a 4870 as well.

And If you do get the oem chip you will need a cpu cooler. If you get the retail one i would still buy another cooler.

Got a thermalright 120 extreme for the cpu.

Cheers, will do.

Hmm so is the 4870 as good as the 280 or near enough then? Just a bit scary as Ive never had an ATI card lol.

With a 4870 it comes out at £832 with 10% off etc, would it be worth upgrading anything? I'm trying to compare all the different versions of the p5q mobo to see which to choose.

Ahh i could add a Velociraptor 300gb :D.

EDIT: Just noticed the 640gb spinpoint is only 16mb cache compared to the 750gbs 32mb cache. Would that not make the 750 faster?

Thanks for the help guys.

Just a quick question regarding the Tagan psu Ive chosen and the 9800gx2 and 280.

It says in the product description that the cards require a true 8 pin pci express lead but the Tagan PSU says it comes with a 6+2 pin lead. Could someone recommend me a compatible psu please?
