looking to spend no more than 1000 on this and would like to know what would be best for my money.

All i need is CPU, motherboard, ram, graphics and PSU

would it be possible to get a 8800GTX in there?, would also like a 2.4ghz core 2 duo.

lets see what you can come up with

Thanks

... here is what i would buy:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ 2.00GHz (Socket AM2) - £105.74

Asus M2N32-SLi-DLX nForce 590 SLi (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard - £132.76

Gainward BLISS GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - £458.24

BFG 800W UK/PFC Approved PSU - £135.11

G.Skill 2GB DDR2 NR PC2-6400 (2x1GB) CAS5 Dual Channel Kit - £173.89

total = £1005.74 inc VAT

and as you can see, enough room for upgrades later on and only 6 quid over budget and a reasonably high spec setup.

i was able to spec something myself but a bit over budget

is there anything i could change to shave off up to £100?

i would prefer intel core 2 over an athlon, and the 2gb ram is a must

conroe would out perform that i think. :)

and you sir have corrected me lol! umm, to be honest, i would use amd, under personal preference for mid/high end gaming rigs, due to the original post stated that it was prefered to have a 8800 in the case, i used my brain. if he/she wanted a 8800, it would have seemed like he/she wanted a gaeming rig, and AMD's are known (not sure if proven, i dont want to start another debate) to be the better choice for (like i said) mid/high end gameing rigs.

but, you are correct, a conroe (if chosen wisely) would outdo this setup.

thanks, ags :)

Not at all, read up on stuff, conroe totally and utterly floors anything AMD have right now, even the cheapest conroe overclocked to the same speed as AMD's fastest (easly done) totally puts the AMD under the table

I by the way use AMD as im not upgrading yet, if I was gettin new stuff now, INTEL for sure
