I've just found out that I've been left £1000 from my step-granddad provided that I spend it and don't put it on bills.

It hasn't fully sunk in yet but I've thought the one thing I'd love to do is upgrade my PC. Now, I can start from scratch.

Its been a while since I've been savvy with hardware so I was wondering if anyone could recommend a bundle from OCuk and a monitor that I could have for my budget.

Ideally, I would want some cash left over.

Thanks.

first of all what will you be using your pc for ie every day use gaming

Sorry, yeah.

I used to play games a lot but then I gradually slowed down. Now, the only games I play are FIFA and Steam games. Although, I will get back into games with the right system. New Max Payne, new Hitman, any new GTAs, Crysis 2 etc.

I think the main use for the PC will be as a media centre for playing DVDs (Blu Rays).

Thanks.

Thanks. The one thing I'm worried about is that I've never built a PC from scratch before.

Are you definitely against getting a bundle?

I'm not definitely against it, however you'd have to settle for a lower spec to stay within budget and learning to build a PC is a good experience and a lot easier than most people think. These days I consider PC building as 'lego for big kids' as it's basically sticking lots of bits together. There are countless guides (both written and video) to be found online and if you have any problems there are lots of helpful people on these forums who'd be willing to help out.

Cool, thanks. I will build it myself. I'm sure it will help me.

Thanks again. Gotta wait for the cheque so I don't know when I'll buy it.

If you're not sure when you're going to buy it then just do yourself a favour and check up on latest offers etc. It can save you a lot of money.

:)

Cheers, will do.

[EDIT] Actually, I can save money on the HDD and use my current one?

I have just bought a Samsung HD103SJ Spinpoint F3 1TB Hard Drive SATAII 7200rpm 32MB Cache. Hmm, I guess they've stopped doing my one so I can't get the name. Mine is the same pretty much but 500GB.

If I keep that I won't need to reload an OS or anything.

Sorry, made a new post to bump this back up. Would I need to buy a better sound card or is the one on the mobo good enough (8 Channel HD Audio with THX TruStudio Pro)?

Thanks.

What sound are you going to be using? If just typical stereo 2 way gaming then onboard should be fine, if you're going to be using it as a music source/5.1 gaming then you should consider buying a seperate sound card.

Nah, I'll be using my 2.1 speakers for film and gaming so I suppose that a sound card isn't urgent.

Right, update. I got the cheque today but I won't be home until April 11th so I think I'll postpone my purchase till then.

I'll reply when I'm ready to purchase to double check if there are any bargains I should take then.

Thanks.

*bump* By the way, the original setup which costed around £930 inc shipping now comes to £970.

Should I order sooner or could I wait till April?

Thanks.
