1000w psu enough for 2 GTX 590 in sli ?

1000 will be on its limits if the rest of the system is.. Won't draw anymore than 800w I shouldnt think

I'ld go for Tri Sli over Quad Sli (or indeed Sli) as it brings less microstutter out of the 3 combinations.

he might be doing some medical imaging. the FASTRA II has 13 GPUs in SLI for that (with a custom BIOS to make that work)

Yep, something like folding at home. Not everyone uses theiir rig for gaming. Fah is a pretty decent cause, and very competitive as well i believe.
