So, my dad's looking at replacing his aging laptop (Amd a8 6410) with a PC since it's slow as molasses (5400rpm drive) and he won't use it for too much, just some casual 2d autocad at the worst case. I've dug out my old 1055T plus mobo and ram, and am just looking at getting the remaining parts he needs to complete the build, but before I spend money, how will the 1055T hold up these days? I think I remember being able to overclock this one to near 4Ghz, though I'd scale it back from there as he wants a silent pc. But for regular windows use, I assume it will still be fine? Going to an SSD from the 5400 should also give a massive speed boost, but I really just want reassurance that there's not going to be issues using a 9 year old CPU these days!

it obviously won't be super fast but its still capable of being used as a PC.

I have seen plenty people running older hardware.
I suppose best thing is to try it and if it doesn't hold up upgrade it.

SSD can be transferred to another build, what else are you planning on spending money on ?

Monitor and case are the two main things to get. Gonna get this case because it's going to be in the living room and needs to be as quiet as possible. Then got an 500W OCZ power supply, a 6870x2 and an AIO cooler for the cpu.

Already have the SSD as well, so that should cover everything and still be nice and quiet for him. I might give it a small overclock to help make up for the age, but since the worst thing he does is run autocad, it shouldn't be needed too much, the main thing is to keep the fans from spinning up too much.
Would stick a quieter gpu in there, but it's all I have. Might look into undervolting it and setting a lower fan profile.
