What are these cars like to live with ?

Ive owned 3 1.4 306's (same engine as the quiksilver 106) and all of them broke all the time, granted i was a n00b and did a plethora of wheelspins etc, no wonder my clutch and gbox never survived.

I then owned a 1.4 golf and nothing broke except brakes, which id already bought uprated pads and discs for so it wasnt a bother, i even managed to get a lot of water in the engine one night after driving slowly through a puddle and my cone filter sucking it in, but it was fine after about 100 backfires.

Ive driven a 106 quiksilver and i liked it, seemed nippy enough, but id like a gti.

questions:

how are they for mpg ?

Do they come with full leather and aircon ?

how hard is it to tune to 160hp ? Ill be going down the cheap vems management and bike tb's route.

Are they the go kart everyone thinks they are ?

cheers

I tend to get about 200 - 250 miles to a tank but ive had it under 200. Depends on how you drive it but id say a minimum of 180 if really thrashing it.

Half leather on S plates onwards i believe. Dont think air con was even an option extra.

Not sure regarding tuning.

Yes, great fun car to drive. It is nippy and handling is great.

I got 40mpg from mine under normal, not caning it, day to day commuting. 30ish mpg if you drive it as intended.

As already said, half leather was only an option in P and R plate cars, and many of these have cloth seats. The half leathers were standard from S plate onwards. Vicious is right, no aircon at all.

160bhp is pushing it for cheap tuning. You'll be looking at induction kit, manifold, decat exhaust, cams and throttle bodies for that much power.

They are fantastic to drive. As standard, they're chuckable, grippy, adjustable on the limit and a hoot to drive. Lowered and stiffened, they are indeed a total go kart. But only on smooth roads - you pay the price in bobbing and skipping over bumps, and they loose that adjustable limit and become quite snappy.

Im looking to buy one of these in the next few months.

Im hoping to get as low miles example as possible but not sure on my budget yet should be 3k+

They seem to demand premium prices for the age and milage some of them for sale have.

Does anyone know what i should look out for (what to avoid) when looking to buy.

Cheers.

As new as possible, as low a mileage as possible, and as standard as possible - especially suspension-wise.

They don't bear mileage well - the dampers on mine were knackered at 60k miles, after less than 10k miles on the lowering springs the previous owner put on. Radiator was leaking like a seive by 60k, power steering pump gave up the ghost at 65k, wheel bearing gave up at 70k, the gearbox went pop at 75k...

Engines are strong though. Rest of the car is made of Brie.
