Think I'll get him the powercolor 480. For the money seems the best option currently.
Thanks all for there input.
You want it idiot proof, good luck with that.
More seriously though, I'm not going to tell you that one is clearly better than the other, like some people might. Both are good cards, somewhat hampered by the pricing, a lot of which is down to the pound taking a nose dive, but good cards none the less.
If not overclocking, it can be useful to note that the NVidia's 1060 boosts all by it self much higher than AMD's 480 boost works, but this is down to the way the two systems work and how the two companies advertise the feature.
AMD state a boost clock and unless you over clock the card it will not go above that figure.
NVidia state a boost clock and that is the minimum figure you will see when the card is boosting, a lot of the time it will boost more than that figure.
In most games that you can play right now the 1060 is faster.
The 480 has potential for future titles with good DX12 performance.
If it was my money I would want the best performance now and therefore go with the 1060. probably this one for the 5 year warranty.
My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £239.99
(includes shipping: £0.00)
Every single new title comes with DX12 and Async compute, even the CIV 6 supports it.
And atm the

At £229.99 is by far the best 480, and overclocks surprisingly well.

The 480 is getting better with each driver update at the moment, so it's hard to tell what the final performance will look like. But when a £250 card is within 10fps of a £600 one in some new games, AMD are doing something right (or Nvidia is doing something very wrong).
I have an XFX XXX one and it's been solid so far. It's running noticeably quicker than my 970 was. You can turn the voltage down quite a bit from AMD's default as well (running mine at 1050mv), which opens up a lot more overclocking room.
What bad reviews and glitches are you talking about with the RX480. As far as i am aware there is none. I would get this if i were buying as it should out last the 1060 while giving similar performance.
Have you been to the AMD forums lately? Tons of threads and comments regarding problems with the RXxxx.
Meanwhile on geforce forums not one single problem can be found
