I'm stuck between the 2, both fairly equal in price and performance. It will be used for the oculus dk2 and I can't find many comparison in respect to VR.

If GTX 1080 is of any indication than 1060 should be quite a bit faster than 980 when it comes to VR due to implementation of
Simultaneous Multi-Projection.

The 1080 has a completely different chip to the 1060. Out of its league.
It doesn't matter because 1060 still has simultaneous multi projection.
If you look at that graph 1080 is less that 2x faster in gaming but around 3x as fast in VR.

I looked at normal bench's which puts the 980 ahead of the 1060, but with VR I'm not sure of performance to say which way :x

One of the big features that makes up SMP is multi-res shading, which is supported for Maxwell already. Even so, I wouldn't base any purchase entirely on these features since there are very few titles that integrate VRWorks (VR Funhouse, Raw Data, ???) and probably won't be for quite a while.
