Do you have to have an overclocked CPU to run this RAM in your system? I'm a bit confused and was thinking of upgrading from 800Mhz.

Thanks,

Johnny.

Providing your CPU has atleast a 266mhz FSB then you can run 1066mhz memory without overclocking.

But tbh it would be a waste of your money.

Well I am spec'ing a new build. Would you recommend DDR3 or is it still a waste?

Thanks.

You can run it with any cpu ;).

The thing is that you probably would not see any difference if your RAM has 1066, 1600,2000 or 533mhz as long as your CPU is running at 266.

Just divide by 2 the amount of MHZ and you get the real FSB speed for DDR2.

Anything that runs faster than your CPU doesnt matter.

So lets say for 400mhz overclock (for E8400 it willbe 9x400=3.6ghz) on CPU you only need PC6400 ram on default settings.

PC6400 memories are able to run anything up to 1000+ mhz so you have about 530-540fsb headroom for CPU and that will be 530x9= 4.7ghz.

Unless you overclock more than this you don't need 1066mhz memory ;).
