Morning folks,

I plan on snagging a 1070 or 1080 to replace my current SLI 670s but I'm trying to evaluate the gains i'd get from a 1080 to determine if it's worth it based on gaming at 2560x1440.

Current spec below. Based on previous discussions I think I'm in a good spot with the rest of the system and don't need to upgrade. It's mainly used for gaming but I have gotten pretty heavily into 3d design so considered extra ram/new cpu but not sure if it's worth it at this point.

S2716DG 27" 2560x1440
i5-3750K @ 3.8Ghz
SLI GTX 670 MSI OC Edition
Antec TruePower Modular 750W
Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H Intel Z77 DDR3 Motherboard
Fractal Design Arc Midi Tower Case
Akasa AK-CC4008HP01 Venom Voodoo CPU Cooler
GeIL EVO Leggera 8GB (2x4GB)
Samsung 128GB SSD 840 PRO
Samsung 250GB SSD 840 EVO
Crucial M4 SSD - 64GB
WD 500GB HDD

Thinking a 1070 would cut the mustard but i'll likely have this card for the next 4+ years so tempted by a 1080.

Cheers

I have the same kinda spec as you (see sig). I just updraded to a Zotac AMP Extreme GTX 1070 and went from 8GB of ram to 16GB. It seems to play everything without any issues at 1080p 60fps. All depends if you can warrent the extra money for the 1080. If you have the money, then may aswel got top tier I guess..

I bought that RAM. Good mark up between speed and timings. Once you jump up to 2133Mhz then you get CL11 timings or higher. Not that you would notice it in real world gaming.

Upping the ram from 8 to 16 will make no difference, I went from 8 to 32 and no difference for gaming, I would have picked up a 1080 for 1440 if I didn't have 2 980ti's. If you are paying out for a new card you might as well get a 1080 that you know can handle 1440p.

I did read in a few reviews that DOOM uses 6GB of ram when maxed out settings wise. I know when Im idle in W10 I use 1.2GB of ram. So thats 7.2GB of ram used with little to spare. If those reviews are indeed correct.

I also notice a lot of games now Recomend 8GB of ram. So I just thought for the sake of £80 it's just a bit more future proof.

I game on a 1440p 165 hertz Rog Swift, no game I have played and I have over 1200 on steam has ever used over 8gb. I only have 32gb now because I needed more for other stuff.

If you can afford it then go with the Nvidia 1080. It'll give you the best gaming experience now and will last longer.

No harm in going for 16GB of RAM, especially if you can sell you current set to make some money back.

Thanks guys. I got the ram in the end but i had a bit of a blunder with my PSU while cleaning my internal case fans with a spray tin...lets just say i'm concerned about it's integrity now and would rather replace it....

Looking for a 750W'ish or around £80 but was wondering about the 8-pin requirement for the gtx1070. Old PSU was an Antec TP750 so it had the required power. Would the likes of a corsair 750M or EVGA 750GQ be suitable and come with a 6 to 8 pin adaptor? ive checked the specs but they just mention modular cable packs (no details).

Thanks

You could run a single 1070 on a decent 500w power supply easily. I run 2 980ti's with a highly overclocked 5960x and ram, not to mention the rest on a 850w without a problem. That is a decent PSU Lewis has posted though.I would get a 600w to be sure but that is more than enough.

Good advice. I was just going for what OP asked for I neglected to look at the rest of the build ;)
