1070 fan still noisy even when game has been turned off?

So I've been playing a ton of Doom on Ultra since I installed my new 1070 earlier this week, so I get that the fan will work overtime. However, once the game is stopped and exited, isn't the fan supposed to automatically quieten down?

I have to reboot the system for it to restore back to 'quiet' mode.

Yeah what model is it? The reference cooler is known to be on the louder side.

It should spin relative to its temperature at all times though. So if you exit a game it should slow down after a minute or so. It don't be totally instant because it needs to cool down the GPU die first.

Check that:

1. Nvidia control panel power mode is not set to 'performance' its set as adaptive or optimal
2. Something like MSI afterburner or EVGA precision are showing the clock speeds reduced in a desktop environment

It may continue to blow for a few minutes while the GPU cools but it should reduce back down, seems like something is stopping it do that and usually its a settings thing.

I would check in AfterBurner or HWMonitor to see what the GPU temp and fan speed are before you launch a game, then what they go up to during the game, and then what they go down to after the game is closed (could take quite a few minutes to cool down).

You should see the fan speed and temp increase quickly when the game starts, and eventually settle at a maximum point. Then after the game is closed the temp and fan speed should slowly fall back to their original level (or close to it).

If the fan continues to spin fast for a long time, even after the GPU has cooled down then that is a problem, but that's unlikely.

The G1 should stop the fans at below 50c, check the temps.

If it's above 50c you case must be poor at expelling heat, if it's below that and the fans are still running it's probably a software setting.

Also make sure the GPU is idle and something isn't running.

I have a Gigabyte G1 Gaming 1080 and when I finish playing a game, it does take some time to get the card cool enough for the fans to stop spinning. Are you using any OC software? Or even the Gigabyte software?

^^^^ Maybe the G1 1080 runs more toasty than the 1070....?

My G1 1070, with the Extreme software installed, soon(ish) returns to zero fans, as that "Fan Stop" message lights up after using 3D stuff. The GPU fans seem to scale down as well as up depending on temp. However I don't hear it.

I have quite a few 140mm case fans fitted to my Define R5 case (with padded soundproofing) and a R1 Ultimate to the CPU and they are quiet, apart from when the CPU is being heavily used and then I can hear that fan speed up.

The Gigabyte 1070 G1 is quiet for me in use with reasonable ambient temps in the room but with good case cooling and air flow.

Without the Extreme software installed I don't think that you get the Fan Stop feature.

You should do, as fan curve is handled by the card's BIOS. I had a Gigabyte R9 Fury briefly a few weeks ago and its fans stopped at idle just fine without additional software.

I have a similar issue with my 980ti since the latest windows update, I have a inno3d hydro with an extra fan plugged into my mobo, and when the temps decrease it stays on full when all my other fans slow down. I have use open hardware monitor to change the fan speed and it goes back to normal.

Just tested that and you are right.
I did read, prior to buying the card, that you needed the Extreme software utility installed to get the Fan Stop light to work.
After testing, by stopping the software, mine works just the same with the fans stopping and the Fan Stop message lighting up on the card..

so I opened up the case and noticed there was a loose lead catching onto one of the fans.

Now the card makes little to no noise at all. The end.
