1070 - FE vs custom?

I'm thinking about an early upgrade from my MSI GTX 970.

I'd originally been looking at the MSI Gaming 8G as I've been happy with the equivalent 970, but the price difference between the Zotac Founder's Edition and the custom MSI is significant.

Just how much better are the custom versions? I can live without a couple of extra fps but I really don't want a noisy card.

I found the FE cards to be pretty much acceptable noise-wise, but if you have decent case airflow then a decent custom card will be the quieter solution (the FE has the added bonus of pushing most of its heat out of the case, albeit at a slightly higher noise level) :)

If you don't care for that little extra cooling and/or you're not an*l about a little fan noise I'd go for the FE personally.
I'm not convinced the non-FE cards are better quality than FE and think often the parts are cheaper - people just paying a premium for keeping the card cooler and at a quieter fan RPM.

If you want to just put a card in your machine and game on, go for the FE.
There's been some evidence or rumour(?) that the better chips are in the FE cards. So the FE cards can clock as high as the non-FE cards but just a bit more noisey when doing so.
The non-FE cards often look shi* and rememeber the hot air is blown into the case rather than out the back of it which can never be a good thing

Did you try the 1070 FE too?

Under the shroud the 70 FE is a cheap imitator with just a lump for a heatsink where as the 1080 cooler has a superior vapour chamber.

No, but I've seen that the temps and noise-level are virtually the same as the 1080 FE in reviews (with the 1070 having less cores of course to compensate)

Maybe I'm just over cautious now as my 970 FE went up in a puff of smoke, but I still think Nv's omission of the vapour chamber is tight as considering the 1070's pp's.

But, considering some of the custom AIB's have made a mess of things, it's maybe the better choice as last I heard all FE's had Sammsung, now idk what I'd pick anymore.:p

The FE cards are brilliant, I owned a 1080 FE, If you wear headphones then noise isn't n issue at all, Even without headphones they don't really get loud unless you spin the fan at 100%.

The FE's are built like tanks too so that's a bonus :)

Very impressed with the 1070 FE I'm using until Vega lands.

AS others have said, very solid contruction, nice and quiet and cools the card well.

wait untill black friday, if a 1070 doesn't goon offer ah well pull the trigger if it does and you get a good card for sub £300 then you'll be ****** :p

I'm in love with my reference 980 Tis in sli after owning quite a few different Ti's asus strix classified, I can honestly say the build quality is fantastic, I have noticed my pc in general isn't as hot as it once was and with a custom fan profile set at 1:1 it doesn't get too noisy and hot either.

noise levels are hard to gauge as each person has a different tolerance.

my founders edition is reasonably quiet though, quieter than what I was expecting.

sure, an aftermarket card is going to have better cooling and be quieter, but I wouldn't justify spending an extra £80 or whatever it is on the MSI 8G.

but yeah wait for black friday now and see what deals show up.

p.s. the Gigabyte FE is still shipping with a free 750W power supply
