1070 SLI very poor performance

Wonder if someone can post Heaven Benchmark with SLI 1070's
or even with a single 1070.

I'm beginning to think my cards have problems, it's about as fast with one card as SLI

well benchmarking 3dmark gives me a different score on single and SLI

clearly there is a difference but in actual real time gaming there is no change so I must figure this out, it that what your getting, no difference between your single and sli set up?

i will post my single and sli results on the 1070 owners thread in the meantime it is:

1440p

SCORE 8321 with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070(1x) and Intel Core i7-5930K

SCORE 13230 with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070(2x) and Intel Core i7-5930K

well to be honest a lot of people on these forums give advice without having a clue what they are talking about. Don't buy a 980Ti, that's old tech and bla bla, future bla, bad.

buy this, buy that. The fact is the 980 TI in SLI will be an amazing combo for years, regardless of Vulkan and DX 12 and DX 13 and Vulkan 1.b and what not.

Now, is there anything that can be done to get those SLI'd 1070 to perform at least as well as the previous cards?

lol, well this is my main mission now, to figure out whats causing this anomaly, im pretty sure im not alone in this scenario

oh had a quick look at the bios on the pcie slots

it shows as the 1st card running in slot one at 16x speed

it shows 2nd card on slot 4 running at x8 speed

now looking at the manual it states that slot 1 and 4 is both 16x lane so the 1070 in sli slot 1 & 4 both should be running at x16, so how comes its now at 16x and 8x ?

Which mobo?

RU running Gsync and Fast sync?

Turn both off and run FS Ultra

Do you use an OSD? If so, monitor the cards usage and clocks via that and report back.

As someone has said, try uninstalling Geforce Experience. I have no idea why that would help, but it appears to have helped a number of people improve their SLI performance and utilization.

I have a 4K monitor and decided on a 1070 coming from a 980 as even the 1080 isn't enough for 4K so I'm waiting for Vega or 1080Ti before I spend more on a GPU.

There's not a lot to add to be honest. When moving from one set of cards to another that should perform roughly equal but don't due to a lack of driver optimisations yet don't be surprised?

yeah your probably right, it may be a year or more before the proper dx12 games and driver optimisation get released..

whats OSD?

Ive always used geforce experience and it doesnt make a difference for me

im gonna install afterburner to check up on my gpu usage, need to figure out if that 2nd card is being utilised..

can someone provide me with a idiots guide to overclocking these 1070s?

ive installed asus gpu tweak software and its showing me its at gpu clock 1633 and memory clock 8014 so what number do i increase it too?

want to see if i could increase the fps but am abit confused,? maybe you have a number thats good to go so i can apply it,,,,

Also if i fail a overclock on the cards and my PC crashes how does one get back to default clocks on the graphics card if i cant access my pc due to crashing? oviously the bios on mobo will be useless yes?

Well first I dont understand why you decided to go from 980ti to 1070 is sort of equal performance.

Second SLI isnt really ideal, you wasting hardware as things dont scale linearly performance wise.

Third as to why its worse than 980 SLI I dont know. Maybe pascal scales even worse than maxwell which might be why nvidia decided to reduce their SLI support.

OSD means onscreen display, useful to see temps, clocks, utilisation etc., whilst in a full screen game.

For overclocking every card is different, but you can try to aim for 2ghz clock on the gpu core, and 9ghz on the memory. Also increase the power limit to its max setting (TDP limit not voltage).

Final note, dont use the gpuz figures to see your gpu core speed, as thats just cosmetic figures put in a bios table, use the OSD in a game or bench to see how high your card is clocking. e.g. mine says 1898mhz but clocks up to 2050mhz.

not sure if the mobo bios will make any difference but the motherboard i have is the x99 strix, this is a newly released mobo so the bios i have would bne the latest

Highly unlikely it will have the latest bios

Latest bios is 0801

Are these the 2 slots you used?

Asus tweak isn't the best for this IMO

I prefer to use Afterburner.

Send back both 1070's and get a 1080. Saves all the hassle of SLI and you get almost the same performance for less power and less headache.

On Screen Display. Rivatuner, which comes with Afterburner or Precision X (I think). You can set it up to display pretty much any aspect of your gpu and system performance. That will let you know your cpu usage and gpu1 and gpu2 usage.

The sensors tab in gpu-z will tell you what your card actually clocks to as well. Certainly more accurate than the likes of the Unigine benchmarks which shows clocks way in excess of their actual number, for example.

for some people

A tip for those that use Geforce Experience and have SLI
https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18739667&highlight=geforce+experience

TURN IT OFF!!!

I've basically always had it running just because I like shadowplay and ....well I don't know really.

Wow, not sure if it's a 4K thing or not but before my gpu usage in games was always a bit annoying. Maybe 70%- 85% sometimes 95 depending on the game.

Since turning it off every game I've tried....96-100% load. Boom

Give it a go
Yeah - 4k 1080 sli here. Never normally install GFE, but did this time. It made one of my cards run full pelt continuously, and the other run at about 738mhz and no more.

Uninstalled and everythings fine now.
WOW again. I noticed dying light sli usage was still 80% ish. I uninstalled GFE and now 99-100% usage! WTF!

We need to tell the world about this. I've had GFE installed since it came out and never saw anyone say it caused this issue.
