So I've just upgraded everything in my PC other than the graphics card, gone for an i512400F, 16GB 3200 RAM with an WD Black SN850 1TB SSD M.2. I'm still using my 1070 but am considering upgrading it now. I only game at 1080p but have a 144hz monitor. I've had a look at the store and the most palatable costing card is the 3060, I figure I can recoup £200ish for my current one. I'm just wondering whether its a decent enough upgrade?

It's going to be a decent upgrade in RTX titles but otherwise not so much. A 3060 is really only between a 1080 & 1080 Ti in performance, give or take depending on how Nvidia's abandonment of Pascal impacts that game's performance due to drivers.

I did read one place stating nearly a 30% increase in frame rates but other stating very similar. Seems mental to be paying over 500 quid for a new card which doesn't do much more than a 4 year old card which cost £360. A 3070ti is 800 quid, so even taking £200 off I'm still out of pocket to the tune of £600 but does look to offer a significant improvement on the 3060. I think I'd be more inclined to pay for the 3070ti and get a huge increase in performance rather than a minimal one.

I haven't really been paying attention to hardware since my last upgrade, is it realistic to expect a price drop in the next few months?

If you're wanting to run RT then 3060ti is the minimum performance you want, it can do full RT at 1080p 60fps with DLSS. Prices look like they're dropping, stock levels are good, be patient and wait a couple of months for a good deal or try for a 3070 FE drop.

Set up alerts and try pick up a founders edition rtx3060ti/70/70ti/80 for MSRP and the 1070 is still a solid card to use in the meantime.

Its more like ~50% faster on average.

In some situations though, can be more like ~80% faster.

Pretty decent upgrade if the cost to change isnt too much.

If you can nab a founders 3060ti/3070 at RRP that would be a massive jump though, and definitely worth it ( and the cost to change wouldnt be too bad as you can likely still get decent money for the 1070 at the moment).

In what is almost an unbelievable coincidence, my 1070 just died. PC just shut down in middle of use and wouldn't boot. I unplugged the power from the graphics card and it booted fine. The 1070 won't boot in my sons PC either and my PC is currently running with his 1060 in. 3070ti incoming then.

The amount of purchases I've justified due to "unbelievable coincidence" to Mrs Turnip... :p

It's a shame the 1070 died, but you'll probably be delighted when the 3070ti is in and going!

Yeah the wife is not massively convinced. Not being able to recoup a couple of hundred for my old card is a bit of an extra sting too. Just trying to figure out which one will be quietest.

EDIT
Actually, the GEFORCE RTX 3070 TI GAMING OC 8GB comes with double the warranty of the other ones so decision made.

That's a much better upgrade than 3060 ... maybe overkill at 1080P? but you will get years out of it :)

Have you seen the crazy prices of faulty 1070s ?.. You'll still be getting ~ £100 back for it.
