I am going to get a 1070 for Xmas. I am upgrading from a 970 and use an HTC Vive hence the need for a 1070, apart from that I play non VR games at 1080p.

I want to spend under £400 and so far I like the look of the GeForce GTX 1070 PHOENIX Golden Sample, higher boost clock than most at that price although only a 2yr warranty. I also understand most 1070's will boost to over 2000Mhz regardless of what it says on the box.

Is it worth waiting until the sales after Xmas? If I'm only going to save £20 - £30 I will order now.

People will say wait for VEGA wait for this and wait for that....

Just enjoy some christmas gaming....1070 and 1080 will not suddendly drop in price after christmas...

Te sterling is in crisis...Just get your card now.

If you're not too bothered by £20-30 and you have lot of free time over Christmas get it now and enjoy it. You could always ask if they refund the difference if the card you buy goes on sale. :) Some shops are better at this than others though.

id recommend either the asus strix version or the zotac amp range.i brought my strix for £395.great deal great card.

If the 1070s are reduced by more than £40 it'll be a Christmas miracle. No retailer will cutt hat much from one of their fastest moving products.

I'm going for a Zotac Amp Extreme in the new year, seems to me to offer very good performance, good temps and an excellent (5yr) warranty it's currently retailing over £400 but the performance and warranty more than make up for it imo, that's my choice to be and I'd suggest you take a look at it and reviews of it. :)

I've just got an Asus Strix 1070 for a little over £400. Are you factoring in selling your 970 and (if you don't want it) the free copy of Watch Dogs 2 you get with the 1070? I figured I was going to make about £140 back in total against the 1070 so didn't really see it as that bad a deal.

I've been looking really hard at the Zotac Amp Extreme but a few things are putting me off.

1. It's huge as I'm sure you know and will need some trimming of my HDD rack.
2. Bit worried about the weight on the MB, will have to support it.
3. Power requirements. I see in some reviews that is has a higher power requirement than other 1070's and I migh be pushing it with my 550W Superflower Gold+

I saw the Gigabyte G1 Gaming at the same price and it comes with a Gigabyte 700W Bronze PSU. I could probably get away with either PSU using the G1 and E-bay the other and net £40.

Final thoughts are just to stick with a cheaper £400 1070 as many state they all OC about the same

Personally I feel £400 on a GPU is too much. Plus I am not convinced that the Nvidia 10 series are truly DX12 cards. (Considering we are not actually in the DX12 area yet)

You should have got one on or around release if you were going to get one IMO

Prices haven't gone down (maybe they even went up?) so to my mind, its wasted time that you could have been at the bleeding edge for your $

But hey, we aint got crystal balls right? So make your predictions for the future and make your bets. Maybe Vega comes soon and halves the value of your 1070 overnight? maybe vega and Nvidia 11xx series are late and/or suck, maybe the pound drops even further? Who knows...

1. I have a large case now in anticipation of the 1070, fair point, then again isn't taking a Dremel to your case at some point not part & parcel of pc building sometimes? :D

2. After my old Asus 580DirectCuII bent so much it damaged the pci-e slot I take your point but would suggest a GPU support to alleviate this.

3. Again fair enough for you, I've got an 850w Corsair HX, but I ran SLI 580's with an old 550w psu and the 1070 is nowhere near the power draw of one 580...

Finally, yes, I'm tempted to get the cheapest 1070 and overclock it, but, I've also read the Amp Extreme will still overclock further, I'm looking for long term bang for buck but without going all out for a 1080 which I can't justify paying such a premium for, the Amp Extreme with its long warranty and especially once overclocked further still fits my bill...

That sold it for me, the Dremel bit :) Sadly I just went to order and the Gears of war promo is over so holding fire now :(
