Hi all,

just got a 1080 palit jetstream in order to play overwatch and maybe try out other games in 4k.
still to decide on which monitor for it (I was thinking the acer predator)

I've seen that other people are getting a Ti in order to play 4k.
What kind of performance do I get in 4k maybe in AA off - can I get 60 fps?

You can definitely get a good, playable experience with a 1080. Not on maxed out everything, but I bet you'd be hard pushed to tell the difference between high and ultra. Just turn up the settings that make a noticeable difference to YOU. Maybe you notice when shadows look particularly bad, or aliasing. Turn those up first, and then adjust other settings around them.

Heck, I think BF4 looked better at 4K on my 970 on medium compared to 1440P High/Ultra.

You just have to play around with settings a little more, to optimise the experience for you.

Don't let PCMR mentalists tell you you can't play 4K on anything other than a 1080 Ti.

Been asked many times, best to used search as can get a bit repetitive.

P.S above came in at same time as my post, not all 1080Ti owners are mentalists, little jelly perhaps?

So you meant a G-Force 3 Ti200?

You and I both know full well that you mean as topic is 1080, so Ti would be 1080Ti, and no, no nerves struck.

Enjoy 4k on your 970. ;)

PS, I have an "old" Titan XM I can spot you if your stuck.

As in I'm saying PCMR people are mentalists, not owners of 1080 TI's.

Also, I don't own a 4K monitor or 970 anymore. 1440p at 144Hz is, for me, a much nicer gaming experience.

I wouldn't look at 4k unless I was going 1080Ti SLI personally, but I'm a 60Hz snob and like 75-100 Hz minimum these days. 3440x1440 is just about ok with one 1080Ti at about 80-90Hz which is a sweetspot on my x34. I was using 980Ti SLI which was better in games that supported it fully.

Of course this is in all your experience of being a member of what, a month

Did not know time actually signed up meant anything over lurking since 2002ish, Thanks for your input or lack thereof.

Also I assumed the 970 user was using DSR not a 4k monitor which IMO was a pointless purchase with that GPU.

Volta/Ampere is possibly the 1st ideal 4k single card.

1080 will be fine. Just need to dial down settings to maintain a higher FPS. Not too much of an issue as modern games all seem to have settings here or there that tank FPS for little visual gain. I run a R9 Nano hooked up to a 4k tv in spare room when I just want to crash and play modern titles just fine once settings are tweaked and have as good of an experience on that as I do with main PC.

thanks so much all, great feedback!
I asked because I youtube-ed it - obviously - and sometimes they reviewers on a 1070 with stuff on med-high were getting 30-35 fps and they were saying these games were playable. Through many years of FPS gaming I can say 30 fps is NOT enough. So that's why I went with 1080 only to see that some people were saying they upgrade because wanting to go from 2k to 4k. I just want a good playable experience and do not need max details necessarily.

If you're primarily looking at FPS games, I would really consider going for 1440P @ 144 Hz, via G-Sync. It'll make for a much better gaming experience.

4K is better quality, high refresh rate is a better experience.

So, I mostly play: LOL, Overwatch, SC2, CS:GO, QL, QC, but with the 1080 I will want to try some games that would just look work better on it than on my "old" GTX970.

Destiny 2 would be one I can think of really quick but maybe others. The only problem is time :-)

Having had both, I have to agree with this. High refresh 1440p is def the sweet spot for gaming, still have great visuals and the utter buttery smoothness of high refresh. If I could get a 35in+ 1440p 144Hz with Gsync I'd buy one right now!!

Thanks. I have another post going in the monitor section here https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/what-4k-monitor-do-i-pick.18799744/

I have shortlisted Acer Predator 32" and Benq but waiting to hear back from people what they think should also be on the list and I will make my decision.

I wouldn't get any of them. Are you close to a store where you can check out a 144 Hz monitor? Or even an iPad Pro 10.5, just so you can see how much of a difference it makes
