1080 SLI?

Ultra/max settings are pointless nowadays. You can't tell the difference. Drop down to high to get the desired performance without spending £300 plus potentially a new PSU.

I recently played through all of FC5, played the first third at medium high then the 2nd maxed as the 1080 coped well but 60-70fps made me drop to high again. I couldn't tell the difference in visual quality at 1440p at all.
This old chestnut...drop the settings to improve performance because someone else can barely tell the difference! Personally I can tell the difference and my eyes aren't young and the idea that the best possible visual quality is somehow 'pointless' is a rather sad statement. Yes The OP could drop settings, they could also drop down to a lower resolution or even play older less demanding games all of which might be a 'solution'.
I game on PC for the best visual settings, if I was happy with medium details because someone else couldn't tell the difference I'd buy a console.

The best point made here is that a 2080ti won't do 4k max at 60hz on many titles but SLI 1080 will.

Yes it doesn't work on lots of games and yes you have to fiddle with it, but the upsides are worth it if you play games that do support it OK.

Currently on the hunt for another 1080ti as all I play are the tomb raider games, GTA V and a couple of other titles that scale okay. I'm at 4k on a 65 HDR OLED so it really does look special once you hit the magic 60hz without sacrificing IQ :)

I just reinstalled my 1080ti after RMA and I can genuinely say that it brings a smile to my face to have them both up running again SLI 4K SSAA 8x Arma 3. It really does look better. Same with GTA 5 it all just looks more real and immersive and the spectacle itself is worth it. 40" 4K.

SLI is dying and many games don't support it, have poor support, don't give that big an uplift in performance and in addition you have extra noise and power requirements to deal with. Like the man above said, save your money, sell your 1080 for £300 and then put your £600 towards a 2080 if you need more performance.

SLI is not dying, so many people not running SLI keep saying this and I don't get it. I have run SLi permanently since 2006 in all my rig, and the SLi related issues I had can be counted on one hand.
The two worst years with SLi was 2016 and 2017 especially because of the DX 12 API, where every one thought multigpu support would be solely done via the API, and the driver support would matter much since game developers would implement it directly in the game. This never happened and we know how it all went with direct multigpu via the API. So in late 2017 nvidia started providing better integrated multigpu support via the drivers. This has only improved in 2018 and 2019, and we also get better NVLink SLI scaling compared to the regular High Bandwidth SLi method.
The only sad thing is that nvidia make NVLink SLi such an expensive option by only supporting it on the high end cards.
I run 2x RTX 2080s and 2x RTX 2080Tis, and before that I ran 2x GTX 1080s and 2x GTX 1080Tis, and I can only say I'm impressed by the scaling gains now in NVLink SLi.

When Nvidia release whatever’s next unless it’s a massive leap in performance I may pick up another 2080Ti and NVLink when they drop in price.

My Zotac has only gone down £100 since I bought it shortly after release, so it won’t be any time soon though.

Agreed.

I initially had 1070 SLI which in games that support SLI was faster than my current 1080ti, I run @4K and the 1080ti copes admirably in most titles but I would like the extra FPS and having had little issues with SLI and - importantly - the select few titles I regularly play on my old rig, I’m on the lookout for another at a decent price.

I appreciate that single cards are the better solution but I’ve no desire to buy a 2080ti (or another new Nvidia card tbh after their blatant ripping off of us imo)

If your chosen games (or the vast majority) support SLI then yes I’d still go for it, if your more into the latest games etc (where SLI support will probably be an afterthought at best) then go with the best single solution you can afford.

If you can tell the difference, great! Good for you, I'm really proud of your keen eye for detail. Enjoy spending.

But most cannot, and suggesting high settings is something OP can do right now with no money spent is worth a punt. I don't think realising that you don't have to spend £300 on an upgrade is sad at all.

Lower resolution, different games and console gaming are all stupid suggestions. You know it, I know it, there is no point even addressing them.
