So my 1080 Ti has coil whine and its really irritating me even at STOC settings.

I've ordered 2 x PSU's (EVGA P2 650w & Corsair RM650x) which are excellent power supplys and silent too - i'll check back if these PSU's fix the whine, or not :)

Can i return the card if it turns out to be the card? (bought from OCUK)

If it really is that bad then yes you should be able to RMA it.

With coil whine just roll up a piece of paper into a cone and listen inside the case to give you a better idea.

If it's from the card it's the card. If it's from the PSU then it's that.

i'm led to believe that PSU's can cause GPU coil whine due to components/design, i know for a fact the card is the origin of the whine just my taking the sideof the case off. I have a define R4 case and i can still hear it above the GPU fans it's that loud.- i want to eliminate my PSU as the cause before returning. So can i return it if the gpu is the cause?

Having a good PSU does help in most cases. I've never had coil whine ever.

A more efficient PSU can make a difference to coil whine. My R9 Fury doesn't have coil whine but when my AX850i died I got a cheaper bronze rated PSU and that's when I noticed the coil whine on my card. As soon as I got my AX850i back from RMA, the coil whine had gone. Always get the highest efficiency model PSU if you can.

I've never had coil whine on any card I have owned and have seen whine on two evga 1080ti's. I have two rigs and two very good highly rated psu's Evga P2 1000w and a corsair rm1000i. My 980ti and gtx 780 have the same power draw as the 1080ti and both show no whine at all. Where as these 1080ti's start whining at 80fps and up.

I did an advanced rma with the 1080ti and the second card also had coil whine. The reference cooler might be hiding the whine for some people but as I run my system on water it's very noticeable.

Best way to test is to run the card with a stress test and listen to the card before the card heats up and the fan ramps up.

I spoke to evga yesterday and they said they would send out another so hopefully the next one will be fine.

The coil whine still exists with the EVGA P2 Platinum PSU.

The PSU is awesome though its silent. The noise is coming from the GPU @ 63% fan speed.

Interesting geordiejc. I bought the exact same Gigabyte card, had the exact same whine then went ahead and bought near enough the exact same EVGA PSU (albeit 850w rated) to test it TODAY!

The thing is a good 70% of the cards I've had in the past (and this is going back to 7970s 290s 290Xs 980s) have had this sort of whine - some worse than others admittedly so I just tend to deal with it now. I wasn't going to send this one back as I too had the automatic upgrade deal with OcUK, but now I'm beginning to wonder whether I should...

I wish I'd gone with the P2 instead of the G2, or even waited for the g3/p3 which I heard about just weeks after getting mine,
That said I've no complaints for the G2 it's an excellent cooler and I've yet to have a coil whine issue,
fingers crossed for Sapphires Vega cards having the same quality as there 1st gen Fury Tri-x's.

The card performs well @ 1987 - 2000 mhz with +700 memory. shame about the whine.

I received 3 x PSU's today, G2, P2 and corsir RX650x - P2 is ~ 10dBA quieter than the G2 according to Tomshardware review. the other 2 are going back.

I kinda feared this might be the case. Pretty poor really and its looking like Nvidia cheaped out on some components for these cards. Is your gpu a reference pcb?
