Hi. I have Gtx 1080 Ti Fe. I bought card in march 2017. However when card is on load and when i put face to my opened case i can feel hot air and weird hot smell. My case is opened always. All protective films are removed.
Gpu temps 83-84C. Cpu temps 60C. 6700K no oc.
That hot smell is always when i run some game and card is heated. Is this normal or not? Psu is Corsair 750 RM.

Its hard to describe this smell. It not smell like burning or something. Just smelling like hot air. Any ideas?

My case is Centurion Cooler Master 590

Something getting hot has a hot smell?
Doesn't sound too "out there" to me. I've never sniffed the air coming out of my PC so I don't know if mine does or not.

founders editions are crap at cooling

84C is very hot. aftermarket cooled version run 60-75C. so up to 25C cooler.

i had the same issue with a 1080 FE. what i did was placed 2 more intake fans in the case as it had spaces and vents already for them. 1 directly blowing directly into it from the bottom of the case (it's vented there) and another blowing directly onto it from the side of the case right on top of the card. temps dropped 20C as soon as I added those 2 fans. it's getting cool air directly into the fan now whereas before it was just warm air inside the case it was sucking in. albeit i had 2 intake fans at the front they weren't blowing directly into the fan rather over the card from distance.

you say your case is always open. this is bad. you need proper airflow within the case as well as the heat being forced out. cold air in. heat out. with the case open all your doing is circulating warm air. case should only be open when your building it.

if you cannot do the above. limit power draw to 90% using afterburner. it will have zero effect on performance but drop temperature by a few degrees. also use a more aggressive fan profile in afterburner too.

I also get a smell when my card is under load. I assumed it was something burning like a medieval witch, though never saw anything untoward. Glad for the reassurance in this thread!

Try them in a Silverstone FT02 or FT05.

oh yeah because the simple answer here is buy an EOL case.

no, I don't think so. Also what makes this case so magical that no other case can do? I switched the founders edition from an S340 Elite to a Corsair 200R and it's 10C cooler even with a second GPU in there whereas with the S340 Elite it was on it's own. So I don't think my case is the problem as an MSI 1080 in the S340 Elite is a good 20C cooler than the FE was.

The reason why the FE is cooler in the 200R is because i have 2 additional intake fans pointed right at it, one directly into the fan so it's getting cool outside air forced into it and another blowing directly over the card.

Point still stands the MSI is 20C cooler in the same case and situation. So it's the card at fault.

AFAIAA neither case is EOL. But they're designed to work with heat rather than against it. Heat rises, so those cases allow the heat to rise up and out.

All of my cases have exhaust fans at the top as well as the rear. 2 of them now have intakes at the bottom pushing air upwards, 1 of them doesn't but I could easily add it in.

Yes, but the flow of air is turbulent, not smooth. It's got to flow around the GPU, rather than simply through and out.

You could argue turbulent is better for stuff that is passively cooled and smooth is better for actively cooled items.

Both the cases you suggest are out of stock or EOL when I googled them and looked at 3 different retailers.

Turbulence is bad as it means noise. You want to help heat find its way out, and I find that a vertical blower cooler does that admirably.

Both are available from Silverstone.
