Hi, my son would like to upgrade his graphics card to the Asus 1080 ti. His motherboard is a gigabyte 990 fxa-ud3 with a AMD piledriver fx8 8 core cpu overclocked to 4.40Ghz, 24 gb memory.

Will the graphics card work as expected?

Thanks

It will work but is a massive mismatch for the CPU. It's also a gen back now so second hand is your only option and they still command a premium because they were/are very good cards. Sounds like a minimum £300 upgrade when that money would be far better spent on the board, processor and memory (depending on what graphics card he already has).

Hi, my son has currently got the MSI geforce gt 730 and according to him it's rubbish. So would you suggest we upgrade the motherboard and cpu? What would be the best motherboard\cpu combination for the 1080 please?

The gt730 is junk but does he need to go from one of the worst to one of the best performing cards when his current system won't be able to pull the frames from it? Something like a 1660 super or a 2060 or even a 5600xt will be a monstrous upgrade and more inline with his current older components. It will also unlock loads of performance from that card when he does move to better cpu/motherboard etc.

To be brutally honest it will work but will hold back even a high/midrange card and your looking at £350 for motherboard, processor & ram minimum plus another £300 + on a second hand 1080ti. You can see it will quickly add up. If it were me I would shop new and at the mid range with a view to buying new cpu etc down the line. With that CPU at 1080p there is unlikely to be huge differences in frame rates between a 1660/2060 class card and a 1080ti simply because the rest of the components can't work the card fully. In short the current components will bottleneck a 1080ti.

Thank you for all your advice. I will have a chat with my son and try to explain that the other components will require upgrading or he can choose one of the cards you have mentioned. Thanks again

The thought is simply balance :) It is well worth upgrading from the bottom to the upper mid end and then save for more performance with cpu, memory and board upgrades. There is a caveat and that is if the 1080ti is super cheap as in <250, then it's worth it. Well worth waiting for some opinions of others also to balance out the viewpoint a little. Whenever you want to chime in lads :)
