looking to purchase a Sony A37/A57 will be used for Still and video

1080i 50fps on the a37

1080p 50fps on the a57

I am thinking about when I film my son playing football etc (will I notice much difference)

is the a57 is a extra £100

the Sony has autofocus when recording video, canon/nikon don't (not at my budget)

why do you want to AF in video?
Sony does have better video AF but it is still fairly poor and nothing you would use if you really care about the video quality. If you just want something convenient for video then your phone is probably a good bet, otherwise most point and shoots offer easier to use video than a DSLR. Video on DSLRs is really only for people interested in generation production quality video, you normally end up modifying the camera and especially lenses so much that it is no longer a still camera. You are looking at buying focus throwing kits, and expensive support systems, focusing screens, audio monitor etc, etc.

50p is much better for movement,
p is basicaly a full frame picture
i is interlaced, so it typicaly is alternate lines of pixels from that frame to old frame

look on youtube for video samples too.

50fps can be annoying on 60hz monitors, and the sony camera's can overheat with prolonged video'ing.

if you expect to do far more video work then a camcorder might be better, most can do reasonable photo's now too :)

Is this from experience? When I owned a A77 the auto focus was fantastic in my opinion. Quality was very good also. This was from the 16-50mm F/2.8 lens though.

Personally if it was me i'd go for the A57. Then why stop at that, get the A65 or A77! The Sony line up does seem very cramped. :p

yes, experiences playing with sony cameras in shops. I travel a lot and spend a lot of time in airports playing with cameras. I can't tell the difference between any of the new Nikon, Canon, Sony, m43 cameras. Fundamentally you don't want to auto focus during video if you want nice focus transitions you must manual focus, and that requires lenses good for MF equipped with focus throwing mechanisms, and a viewfinder of screen suitable for checking focus. The camera has no idea what you want to focus on and at what speed that focus should change, or when it should change, you have to control that - in still photography is is relatively easy to manually select where you want focus and even under an auto-mode the lens has to be focused only once and has to be focused before the shutter is released.

Maybe I've read your post wrong but the A57 isn't a M43 camera?

The Sony's are very good at manual focus too due to their focus peaking feature and EVF viewfinder.

I know the A57 is not m43, what i was saying applies to all cameras i have tested.
