1080p - 1650x1080

I need some info here as I'm not sure about what people mean.

I hear people talking about playing on 1650x1080 then talking about cards handling 1080p etc...

I dont' get it, how do I game on 1080p? Do I need a 120Hz monitor to game at 1080p?

What's the difference between 1680x1050 and 1080p? Surely one is a screen size (1680x1050) and the toehr (1080p) is something different...or what?

I'm getting confused

Where can I find out an explaination for the difference between the screen sizes and 1080p gaming?

Dam my old age brain which can't grasp what people mean :/

1080p and 720p are just terms for 'HD ready' resolutions for buying TVs, monitors etc.

In the early days 720p was the cheaper option, these days most people jump straight to 1080p

1080p = 1920 pixels across x 1080 pixels down
720p = 1280 across x 720 down

1650 x 1050 is mid way between the two

Screen size is the physical dimensions, resolution is number (or size) of pixels inside those physical dimensions.

so If you have a 1920x1080 screen then it's the same as saying you game on a 1080p screen?

If I read someone saying that they are looking for a card to play 1080p then they just mean they want a card to play on a 1920x1080 screen?

Yeah pretty much. Most screens use Progressive anyway, compared to Interlaced.

Almost all 1080p screens will be 1920x1080, as the aspect ratio on them is 16:9

1080 / 9 = 120

120 * 16 = 1920
