With all these new cards coming out I read forums and reviews and everyone talks about 1440p, 4K, 144Hz etc and it makes me wonder, is my Dell U2311H outdated? I feel like I'm running Windows 95 and everyone else is running Windows 8...

Is 1440p that much better? Is it the mainstream resolution now? For all I know 1440p requires and a new GPU every year to run at a reasonable fps and I can't afford to do that.

Thoughts?

Nah, that's an IPS. The vast majority of people are using IPS 1080p monitors. The market for 1440p is growing but IMHO they aren't that great. For gaming they offer no noticeable improvement, and yet murder your GPU, and for desktop applications 2 x 1080p monitors does the same job just as well or better.

I would recommend a 2nd IPS 1080p monitor before a 1440p monitor.

just replaced my aging samsung 1680 x 1050 monitor with a 1080p ips monitor, waiting for it to be delivered.

I work on a 1440p dell, its nice to have the screen real estate at work, but can't justify the cost for home/gaming.

If it still does what you need then it's not outdated; 2560x1440 is great for desktop apps but does nothing much for games, other than require better GPUs.
