1080p LCD as PC monitor

I know this sort of thing has been asked a couple of times, I'm just in need of a bit of confirmation...

Looking to get a 37-42" LCD TV for my lounge to use as my primary PC monitor - I was planning to get a Dell 24" but then I thought how much more awesome it would be to game and watch movies on a massive TV. Been looking at the Samsung LE40M87BD 40" and think it is probably the one for me, sitting nicely just under the big 1k price point.

A few questions -

I'm fairly confident my 7900gtx will be able to power most games at the native rez, and will be getting a G92 when they come out, but I'm not 100% if my current card will actually allow me to connect to a LCD TV - How would I go about it, assuming it can?

Second, I assume if I 'acquire' 1080p source material, I can play it straight off my PC and it will look great...but how will my current media consisting of a lot of average quality avis look?

Third, I did have a 8/12ms (some confusion there) tft at one point and while my current Hyundai N91W is much better for it, I was content with it for gaming and video media - will the 8ms response on most of the TVs I've looked at be adequate?

Fourthly, would anyone strongly recommend a different tv to the samsung?

Before anyone tells me I'm wasting my money on 1080p, the main reason for the extra resolution is so I can game at that rez on such a large TV, not because I reckon 1080p will look that much better than 720p (haven't seen true 1080p in action yet).

EDIT - I will still have my hyundai monitor in the house, probably as the monitor for the family PC, so I have something to take to LANS, and have a hyundai IQ crt if I'm FPSing competitively enough. Sound quality isn't an issue as I run an ad-hoc 7.1 system off my x-fi xtrememusic.

AWPC - appreciate the advice, however, since my rig runs every game I play at max at 1440x900 (only thing I found that makes it struggle in heavy moments is Q4 on ultra and COH at max everything) and that I'm getting mobo/cpu/memory upgrade this summer and almost certainly a new GFX by xmas, added to the fact I still have a nice 19" widescreen tft and 17" crt to game on if necessary, I'm happy to pay the extra for a bit of future-proofing. Going water along with the upgrades too, so should be able to OC the 7900gtx. 1900x1200 is also a bit more intensive than 1900x1080.

EDIT - I see you have Altec Lansing 2.1 - I'm thinking of getting a new 2.1 for centre/sub channel asmy logitech set is rather budget - would you recommend?

Anyone know if you can play games on a LCD TV in non-native rez? If so how does that work and look?

I have the same set.
SD AVI's look very good indeed, once you go to 350MB for a 45 minute episode, it'll have great picture with minimal blocking.

You connect it DVI-HDMI. You can use non native, and let driver/display stretch to full screen. If you choose something like 1680x1050 and stretch it, it should look fine.

My pc in sig played Oblivion on a 1920x1080 outside with decent framerate, hardly any framerate difference between 1680x1050.

Cheers - I tend to grab the 700mb 45 min ones unless im in a rush to see it, so should be good.
