not an expert in this but i think i understand the basics, so heres what i think..

if my setup will be one single 24" monitor running at 1080p (never higher) I would never really require more than 1.5GB of VRAM (this card in mind)....

or will games like BF3 still gain performance from say 3GB even at 1080p? and is it worth shelling out an extra £100 for say Gainward GeForce GTX 580 "Phantom" 3072MB

Sorry if this has been asked before :)

merry xmas :p

If you game on a lower res then its obvious that yes you wont need as much vram or performance, obviously the higher spec the game 1. the more performace raw power it will use and 2. the more ram potentially it will use.

With this logic its common sense to get a higher spec gfx card and buy the best you can afford. If you can afford the extra £100 then go for the 3gig! At some point you may find future games use more ram and then your laughing arnt you.

Hi

I run BF3 on a GTX 580 at 1080p fine with everything on Ultra, HBAO, High FXAA and 2 x AA and is lovely and smooth. I do run the 580 at 900 core & 2200 Mem though for reference.

I personally believe that 1.5Gb of VRAM at 1080p is fine, the extra only really comes into affect above 1080p.

Cheers

Chris

thanks for the help guys! :)

Nothing is guaranteed in life other than death and taxes :).

You can have 10 HIS, EVGA, ASUS (any brand) cards from the same batch that may overclock differently. So try to never see what someone else has and think you'll get the same. It's not saying you won't reach certain clocks, just prevents you setting yourself up for disappointment.

Hi

Its just a standard Pallit GTX580 with an Accelero Xtreme heatsink installed using 1075mV, idles at 25c and maxes out at 52c.

Hi
OP ... I have this card and it's a good one. But then again, pretty much nothing wrong with any of the other makes either. I would say, choose with ever one you fancy. I doubt if you will be unhappy which ever you choose.

Mine quite happily does 880mhz with a slight voltage bump. Might go a bit higher but happy at this.
