Hi guys, looking at a new build and unsure whether to spend the extra and get the 2080Ti or stick with the option of the 1080Ti.

Gaming at 1440p 144hz on a G-sync monitor, my question is... will the 1080Ti look to be a good future proof card at 1440p? With how demanding games are getting.

Personally I'd get the 1080Ti and skip the 20** generation.

Providing you don't want/care about ray tracing just yet, the 1080Ti will be fine for a few years yet.

No such thing as a future proof card either.
 
Its just enough for 1440p 144hz. Any card below it will need lowering of settings. If you want to max games for the years to come, go for the 2080ti. For instance, in assassins creed odyssey, the 1080ti barely gets 58 fps while 2080ti is above 75.
 
it depends how much you can source the 1080ti for....

if its about the same price as a 2080, then you're probably better off with that as that performs the same give or take as the 1080ti plus it will be optimised more for newer games than the 1080ti.

The 2080ti is ridiculously priced and only about 30-35% faster
 
^WTS. Unless you can get the 1080 Ti cheap, don't bother. Not sure why you didn't consider the 2080? If old Ti price anywhere near that of a 2080 - just get the 2080. Forget the Ti snobbery :). If it really has to be a choice between a 1080 Ti at £700+ or a 2080 Ti, I'd splurge the extra cash on the 2080 Ti personally - I'd not want to spend £700+ on old dead end hardware. Alternatively look for a used old Ti but don't overpay for used

I looked into this myself at one point, don't bother with the 2080Ti at 1440p. Works out that it's only 20/25% faster than the 2080 at that resolution, it actually holds the card back! 4k/144hz yes it's worth it, but not at that res.

Vega 64 would be a poor choice in this case due to OPs monitor. For those looking for slightly less power and possibly a new monitor, the prospect of Vega 64 + Freesync is hard to argue with when it can be had so much cheaper than the equivalent Nvidia offering.
 
I nearly ripped my hair out the other night. I bought a new 1070Ti for 399, and that night I saw no less than THREE second hand 1080Tis... for 400 :o

I think the whole Freesync/G-Sync thing is getting over-hyped. OP's monitor is going to be great, no matter what gpu he goes for. G-Sync is just a nice feature. No point selling the kid's Christmas presents so he can buy a 2080 just to stop a bit of screen tearing here and there.
 
No 1080 Ti is not future proof, it is nearly 2 years old now. Looked what happened with 980 Ti launched back in 2015 and 3 years later 980 Ti now struggled with 2018 graphics demanding games at 1440p maxed out settings like Assassin's Creed Odyssey managed 36 fps average and 980 Ti was absolutely murdered unplayable at 4K maxed out settings. The same thing will happen to 1080 Ti with games in 2020.

I looked at 1080 Ti prices, it not worth get one brand new at £700-£1200 range at OCUK and competitors. Now RTX 2080 prices are about to fall with cheapest blower cards price start at £659.99 with Battlefield V bundle so the card cost just £600 alone.

1080ti should last a while assuming you play at normal framerates like 60fps instead of 100s of fps.

Also I would rather have the extra 3 gig of vram vs slightly more gpu horsepower for future proofing as well.

@AthlonXP1800, thats because the 980ti was never a solid 1440p card to begin with. I brought my 1070 (equal to 980ti) and was told by reviewers and the like its a good 1440p card, when the reality was it struggled from day 1. But with that said the 1070 was way more powerful than the 970 I came from, it just was overstated in its capability, meanwhile the 1080ti is actually good enough for 1440p@60 and with a buffer on top.

No gfx card is future proof.

The 980ti is not a good example...and the 2080 is as fast as a 1080ti so the same can be said about one of those.

It really doesn't mattered. Looked what happened with Titan X Maxwell, it was the most powerful flagship GPU in 2015 with massive 12GB VRAM that supposed to be future proofing but it very struggled just like 980 Ti and massive 12GB VRAM buffer went wasted in 2018 games like Just Cause 4 still used around 3.5GB VRAM at 1080p, 4GB VRAM at 1440p and 5GB VRAM at 4K. We still yet to see games to maxed out 12GB VRAM.

Errrr... I've just bought a 1070Ti after spending over a week reading reviews, watching benchmark and comparison videos, studying forums and sorry, but that's a load of cobblers.
