10850K or wait for 1190K?

No, you will. Rocket Lake has 20 PCIe 4.0 lanes, with 4 dedicated to the top NVMe slot and the other 16 going to the PCIe slots. The 4 dedicated SSD lanes are new for Rocket Lake and have been added to match Ryzen's setup. Any other NVMe slots will go through the PCH, which has also had its bandwidth doubled on Z590 to the equivalent of x8 PCIe 3.0. So you could run either two 4.0 drives or one 4.0 drive and two 3.0 drives (or just three 3.0 drives) at full speed on Z590 through on-board M.2 slots alone (assuming you buy a board with three slots). Obviously more if you give up graphics lanes with riser cards.

ok, so this got complicated fast, and answers/info seems to have gotten crossed over, so lets see if I can't clairfy this a bit......

10th Gen CPUs are Comet Lake (like 10900K, 10900KF, 10850K) these can only do PCIe Gen 3
11th Gen CPUs are Rocket Lake (like 11900K etc etc) these are capable of PCIe Gen 4 with a suitable motherboard - z590, possibly/supposedly z490 but some maybe feature limited.

z490 Chipsets are not natively capable of PCIe Gen 4 I believe, so so the PCIe controller within it will be PCIe Gen 3 only, however, there are provisions built into the z490 motherboards, to be able to deliver PCIe Gen 4 to those sockets which are connected directly to the CPU PCIe controller, which in the 11th Gen CPUs will be PCIe Gen 4 capable - these can include PCIe sockets, and m.2 slot(s)

z590 Chipsets are capable of PCIe Gen 4 via their built in controller, but again must be paired with a suitable (ie 11th Gen) CPU as far as I know (I oculd be wrong on this, but I don't think so)

In addition to the PCIe 4 controller on the 11th Gen CPUs there are extra PCIe lanes available, and some are specifically allocated for a set device - such as the 4 lanes allocated to a dedicated m.2 slot (usually the top slot) this arrangement can also be found on some z490 motherboards, meaning the slot will be redundant until you install an 11th Gen CPU.
 
i've never been a fan of the lower end boards, I can see their uses in htpc's or similar primarily singular task type things, but for my mind they usually compromise too much in the features and options areas.
 
If you're going to get a K chip, you have to get a board that has the features to provide the good overclocking, otherwise go for the non K version and cheapy motherboards
 
Based on what 11700k owners are saying, it's quite likely the 10850k overclocked with fast RAM wil be a faster gaming system than the 11900k
 
picked up a £100 10400f and will see which way the wind blows over the next month before I decide on the i7-11700 or i7-101700

Agreed, if i was looking to buy today the 10900KF would definitely be up there, 20 threads and 5.3ghz turbo for under £365, pretty unusual move by Intel.
 
I see no reason to get the 10900 over the 10850 in most reviews the 10850 seems to out shine the 10900 overclocked in most cases very bizarre tbh . I also can't see a 10900kf anywhere online for less than £400

you buy the 10900k for the better binning.

850 are failed 900's

look at the asus sp ratings of them both.
 
I have never been a fan of waiting, if I have the cash and hunger for it now.

Especially in the current climate where every new generation comes with a price bump.
