I currently have a 10900k paired with a 3090. I will be buying a 4000 series GPU when they are available. Would I see any improvement in gaming alone upgrading the 10900k to one of the newer CPU’s coming out soon? I don’t want to buy a top end GPU only to be held back in some way by the CPU or DDR4 for example.

I would honestly expect the difference if there is one to be marginal at best. At 4k you will still be GPU bound, but it depends just how fast the 4000 series are. I don’t think at 4k a 10900k will be a seriously limiting factor though.

That’s what I’m hoping because I would have to upgrade my motherboard and RAM, then might as well go for PCIE 4.0 storage on top so quite costly.

It’s the 1% lows that apparently will be the biggest difference from what I’m reading online. Some games like Cyberpunk seem to be the most noticeable, and others not so much.

At 4K you will be absolutely fine with a 10900k and will happily run over 200fps at 4k .... i have a 10900k myself and when playing at 4K 120hz i have all cpu overclocks off and run the thing stock as it is underutilised most of the time , i also play at 1440p 240hz and in certain games you will start to hit a CPU limit but this is game specific as some will happily climb to 300-400fps etc . Only reason i would actually upgrade is to get that bit extra at 1440p and would comfortably hit 240fps in those that struggle , if i was playing solely at 4K then an upgrade wouldn't even enter my mind and would be after the best gpu you can buy as will actually see good gains :)

Any upgrade will largely be a waste of money if you game at 4K.

Spend your money on a 4090.

This. Stick with your 10900K and spend all your money on a GPU. It'll likely be another several generations before you'd see much/any benefit from upgrading the CPU for 4K gaming.

Thanks for the advice. Looks like I can save some money and stick with my 10900k.

i can tell that all of the advice here is correct.
I had 10850k overclocked to 5.1 and swapped it for 12700k (clocked @5.0)
no difference in 4k and 1440 with 3080.

1080p got some more frames and benchmarks show bigger numbers.. Real life performance is not really that much better.
