Hi All, a quick question :)

I know you can use DAC cables to connect two 10GB SFP+ NICs together - but can I use fibre to do the same thing? We have two buildings that an 8 core OM3 fibre is being installed between next week, and there will be 4 spare fibres. I'd like to use two to connect two servers directly - would that work?

Thanks :)

I haven't got to play with 10Gb much, but wouldn't it depend on what fibre SFP+ module you stick in the NICs?

Intel quote a max of 300m for OM3 with a 10GbaseSR (modules for the X520 NIC)

A mini update on this - firstly the fibre installers are teasing me - they've been on site twice to install, and both times their fusion splicer has failed :( Good job we're not in a rush!

Secondly, I've had two separate sources state that it will work to direct connect, one being the supplier of the hardware who has promised (and written into the quote) that they will buy back the NICs and modules if it won't work.

So fingers crossed :)
