£10k - Golf?

Looking for a car that does everything well and 'looks nice'. Granted the Golf isn't a looker as such but it's not exactly ugly.

Focus has been suggested but 'it doesn't look nice', which is fair enough, the front end is a bit odd looking.

I reckon a petrol will do the job.

Budget is £10k +/- a grand or two, so was just wondering which is the best one to go for? The 1.4 TSI? Had a quick look and a lot of them seem to be DSG equipped, is this a good or bad thing?

Definitely got your heart set on a golf?

I drove a 1.4 TSI recently and found it to be a bit...dull? Not sure that's the word i'm looking for but it just didn't wow me.
Make sure you take one out for a proper play before you commit.

Perhaps you could give us more of an idea for what you're after in your car? Size, the kind of journeys you'll be doing etc.

It's not for me, so dull doesn't really matter...it's replacing a Seat Ibiza. I know it's hardly a leap but I'm not sure what else to recommend. Ideally 5 door, practical, relatively economical, comfortable etc.

It'll be a lot of mixed driving, short journeys and also motorway trips. Open to suggestions.

£11k seems like a lot of money for a 4 year old 54k mile Golf?

It does, but that appears to be what most of them are going for (on PH, anyway). Obviously looking for more than 10 minutes should result in some better cars but I was more thinking about the spec/model to go for rather than exact car.

No more advice? :(

Is there a VW/Golf owners thread on here?

Was just hunting for this one when you popped up with a reply!

You really need to give more info for alternatives tbh, for 10k you can get a lot of car.

Size. How many people are regularly going to be in it. Power? Economy. Any critical features. Max age.

Size - same size as a 5dr Golf.

Mainly two people regularly but will fit 4 some times, so needs to be relatively comfy in the back (although never really had much trouble with the Ibiza so this isn't a big deal). But 5 door is pretty much a must have.

Power - doesn't really need much, nothing more than the average person needs.

Economy - again, don't need 60mpg+ anything around 40 on a run is fine.

Age - I reckon no older than 5 although flexible for the right car. Same as price, £10k is flexible.

No other strict requirements, just need a good all-rounder, similar to a Golf/Focus - don't think there is much else out there?

The 160 is a bit of a liability. If it's just going to be a tool the 120 version of the tsi is a better bet. Should be a bit cheaper too.

Same engine in an Octavia would appeal more to me mind you, or a Jetta even.

If 10k is new focus money then I wouldn't touch one with a barge pole and certainly not over a mk6 golf - crap interior and a crap exterior with dynamics that aren't anything special over the competition anymore. British press won't let you believe this mind you but the likes of the Ceed is a better car (imo).

This shape to be clear:

Don't think they do a decent petrol engine in it though unfortunately

The new astra is actually a pretty damn good car too tbh, I couldn't bring myself to spend 10k on one though (or any of this type of car to be fair)

Far too much money to spend on a 1.8 8th gen civic. You could spend nearly half the money and get just as good a car. Especially when you're getting much newer designs for the same cash

£11.5k for a 62 plate Kia, jesus, no wonder they're so popular! Interior doesn't look amazing mind. Although that's a fair bit of car for the money!

Civic is a good shout, I'll see if it 'looks nice' ;) less cost to purchase and older one isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I wouldn't be spending that much on one with such a terrible engine, but they're now at least as good as the competition so it's only right to expect to pay the same I guess.

Compare the interior to the focus et al and it's much of a muchness. This is where the mk6 or even A3 really stand out (in the flesh at least)

say £7k on a (just) facelift civic makes far more sense to me if it's of interest

Yeah, still drawn to the Golf to be honest. It does appear to be a great all-round package.

Will read up on why the 160 is a liability, but as you quite rightly said, the 120 should be find for a tool. Just thought the 160 looked a bit better, not really checked to see if there is a 120 GT.

The twin charged units have all manner of problems - comes with the territory of how complicated they are. If purchased with an extended vw warranty it'd be relatively hassle free - but if the cheaper, less powerful, simpler car suits anyway then I don't see the need to pick up the 160.

I personally think even basic mk6's look pretty good

Well yes, but he did say it needed to be a certain age, even if he gets exactly the same for much less (same with most cars).
