Samsung today unveiled its first ten megapixel camera phone, pledging to ship the handset in Q2 - in plenty of time to pick up World Cup broadcasts on the device's built-in digital satellite TV tuner.
The SCH-B600's hi-res camera is augmented with 3x optical zoom and a flash - a spec akin to many compact digital cameras. Pictures are stored on the phone's internal memory or on MMCmicro memory cards, and displayed on the phone's 16m-colour display.
The handset's TV reception comes courtesy of a S-DMB (Satellite Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) receiver. Viewers keen to relive match moments will be able to record programming on the phone at MPEG 4 files - storage capacity permitting, of course. The SCH-B600 has 128-voice polyphonic ringtone support, along with the usual MP3 playback. It will include Bluetooth.
Samsung didn't say how much the SCH-B600 will cost, but it did say it will offer the phone in South Korea for CDMA/EvDO networks. With a European roll-out in mind, the company said it is planning GSM and 3G versions too. ®
