10th Anniversary problems

Hi,bought 2 x 1GIG sticks of the 10th Anniversary, mainly for future use.Fitted it into a Medion MD8800 for now & removed memory that was already in PC,just what to run it at stock values.
SPD set the memory to 333Mhz(667) at timimgs 5-3-3-15 but the voltage was still set to 1.8v.PC booted but was very flaky, set to 2.15v(max Mobo will do) & PC would not boot.
Spoke to Tech support & set it up manually, set to 667Mz(comes up 333Mhz in CPUz) timings 3-3-3-12(comes up 3-3-3-16 in CPUz),increased voltage in steps got to 1.95v before at times PC would boot up & Memtest86 passed 8 times then 2 errors.Set to 2.0v & passed 9 tests(about 4hrs)with no errors yet. Also my D945 CPU was idling at about 34oC,now its 57oC ?
Have i got my settings/timings etc right? His the memory faulty/flaky?

Cheers BOB

I bought a second set last week after they dropped the price and it almost seemed to take a couple of days to warm up. Initially I was getting all sorts of memory errors and I really thought I had a duff set. Then I reduced my LDT back to stock and tweaked the Northbridge voltage a bit and hey presto - it worked. That said these ones are not as good as my original pair, only 550MHz truly stable against 600MHz on the first set, but that could be any number of factors.

If you motherboard maximum is 2.15V I reckon you could be struggling as these are rated 2.2V. I take it you don't know anyone that could test them for you in a known-good board?

Hi,thanks for the reply. The Crucial scanner etc says Ballistic(similar spec ,voltage 2.2v etc,is 2.2v needed at stock values?) should run OK in my PC ?
Tried @ 667Mhz 3-3-3-12(comes up 3-3-3-16 in CPUz thou)at 2.0v & no errors, touch wood. However my CPU temp(D945)with PC just idling is 52oC(FSB 200Mhz),put my original 1GB of PC4300 back in and it idles at 34oC.Anyone got any explanation?Just want settings etc which will allow the memory to run at near enough stock values, not much you can adjust thou, memory timings, memory frequency,FSB & mem voltage. If i knew the memory was OK,at least i would know it was OK for use in a self build when i get around to it?

Cheers BOB

Hi,has anybody any ideas why replacing 2x512mb of DDR2 533 with 2GB of DDR2 667,my CPU temp goes up from 35oC to 55oC with PC just idling? & if theres any solution to the problem.

Cheers BOB

If you put the old RAM back in, does the temperature drop again.

My initial thoughts are;

1. The northbridge is having to run harder, so it will heat up more
2. Your PWM is probably having to work harder so it will heat up more.
3. Are the RAM sticks hot?

Do please bear in mind that the 'system' temperature the computer is reporting is actually a sensor somewhere on the motherboard. If you have suddenly blocked a cool air flow to that area or asked a component near that area to do more work (and therefore heat up) it will affect the sensor. Your case isn't really at 50C otherwise your room would be unspeakably hot. I wouldn't worry about it, except to make a note of it on a regular basis because it could be a sign of a component failing.

BTW - try 3-3-3-8 at 667MHz. Every set I've seen so far runs fine at 3-3-3-8-1T@667MHz.

Also - do you consider that your system is 'idling' while it's running permament memory tests?

Hi,thanks for the reply. With the old ram(2x512mb,533Mhz) the CPU temp does go back to 34oC with the PC idling ie just boot up & run nothing except whats running at start up,AV etc.Just strange why it jumps to 55oC when the 2x1GB,667Mhz is installed.Don't know if the CPU multiplier is stuck on max(it has EIST?) ie x17 i think when new memory is in PC(with PC idling with old memory this can be x12 etc, have to check).Theres no Mobo temp sensor on PC,just get a phantom reading for this.Case ain't the best for cooling, its a BTX mobo(MSI 7024,945p chipset) with CPU fan blowing through CPU heatsink then this air goes over NB,memory etc.PSU fan exhausting at back with a seperate adjustable 92mm silverstone exhausting at back also.Have to adjust my CPU fan thou as its only doing 350rpm anyway, but still strange the temp jump up?
Got a multimeter with temp probe on it will do some measurements when i get the chance.
Wanted to use the memory in this PC,then use it with a C2duo,but don't want to build a C2duo system for a few months.Be nice to know the memory isn't faulty, can't try it in another PC thou.
It did pass memtest86 for 10 1/2 hrs at 3-3-3-16,667Mhz,at 2.0v thou.

Cheers BOB

ps do you mean PWM fan control ?CPU fan as that.
pps just read someone running 4-4-4-12 at 1.8v,800Mhz,stable?

Hi,did some temp measurements. All with PC idling ie nothing running but startup things like AV etc.
With original 2x512MB(533Mhz,1.8v):-
CPU HS52oC
CPU 34oC(Everest)
Memory 37oC(off one chip,no HS's covers)
Northbridge HS 69oC(taken at centre & bottom of HS)
CPU fan speed 330rpm

With 2x1GB 10th Anniversary 667Mhz,3-3-3-12(but sets to 16),2.0v:-
CPU HS 51oC
CPU 54oC(Everest)
Memory 39oC(off HS's)
Northbridge HS 71oC(taken centre & bottom of HS)
CPU fan speed 330rpm

With 2x1GB 10th Anniversary 667Mhz,3-3-3-12(but sets to 16),2.0v:-
With CPU fan set in Bios to keep CPU to 30oC,keeps CPU to 30oC or lower Fan at 850rpm.
CPU HS 31oC
CPU 29oC(Everest)
Memory 32oC
Northbridge HS 60oC(taken at centre & bottom)

Ran Memtest86 over night 16 passes no errors,8 1/2hrs,similar results except Northbridge was 53oC,ambient temp down 3oC thou.

Northbridge etc should be cooler with case side on,better air flow & fans at back of PC should drag some air over components, which they are not doing with side off.

Still wierd CPU temp goes up putting the 2GIG in PC,tried the 2GIG at 533Mhz instead of 667Mhz & temp still high at 54oC,unlike 34oC with 2x512MB at 533Mhz?.Also needing 2.0v at 677Mhz even thou timmings are 3-3-3-16(after seeing 1.8v at 800Mhz albeit at slacker timmings in another post).

10th Anniversary might not be faulty?,but won't really know what it really does for a few months till it gets put in a better mobo ?

Hi,ran Orthos(beta) Blend for 8hrs & no errors,at priority 1,if i pick priority 10 my system locks up near enough straight away?Tests OK With priority 8 thou.
Ran S&M CPU passes everything, but memory comes up with a single 1bit error on test 3 for memory?Any ideas?

Does it lock up or does it just not respond? Priority 10 diverts all resources to the Orthos processes so there is nothing left for anything else. The system will appear to lock up, but you can get it back through Task Manager.

Hi,the GO sign runs Ok for a minute, then the blue change goes slow till finally it locks PC up totally.have to press power button & reboot.Running OK now with priority9.Wonder why Memtest & Orthos OK but S&M stops on 3rd memory test with single 1bit error?
