I'm looking for a lightweight notebook with good battery life (6+ hours with general usage eg: browsing with wifi enabled) that is between 11" and 12" in screen size (max 13"), of good build quality, and no gloss finish (matte, or metal).

I've grown tired of netbooks, which, with the exception of the ion netbooks, are very disappointing in their performance. What I want is something that has a form factor and batter life similar to a netbook, but can output video at decent resolutions and maybe run some older or lightweight games like civ4, or half-life2 without stuttering.

My budget is a max of £500-600.

I'd suggest waiting until February for the Alienware m11x, which seems like it'l do everything you want, and even more by the sounds of it! ;D

Well looks interesting, but the Alienware brand is one of the few brands I actively tend to avoid - because you would need be an idiot or ignorant of costs to buy most of their products - maybe this will prove me wrong! What can I get right now?

at that sizeyou will never find one that will play games and have a half decent battery life as they usually have onboard intel graphics

dell 11z is all i can think of really but i think it would struggle with the gaming part. maybe look at the Sony range too

id go 13" . either a dell or the new shaped plastic macbook with HE discount

Anything 11-12" that is a proper laptop (unlike the 11z) is going to cost you upwards of £1000. 13" is probably your better bet, I have an XPS1330 Dell from the ffactory outlet and it fits your description perfectly, unfortunately they seem to have replaced them with something far inferior. :(
