ok so I have a server with 12 x 4TB disks, 11 Disk Raid6 array with 1 spare.

Lets have some guessing on how long a rebuild will take onto the spare?

Used space wont matter, most controllers require the whole array to be rebuilt.

A couple of days back I rebuilt a 8 disk RAID 5 array made up of 2TB disks and this took around 13 hours - it initially quoted 172 hours!
Scale that up I'd expect in the region of 34 hours.

Half used. But I don't think that matters on a rebuild as I imagine it just has to write blocks even if they are don't have any data.

I'm estimating over a week, as we have a 30TB raid50 array with 2TB disks and that takes about 5 days, and raid6 is much slower than raid50.

It's basically impossible to say with much certainty, details of the system and raid controller would help but it still depends on a lot of different factors...

Our DAS has 15 x 2TB disks making 24TB in a raid 5. Rebuild times were two to three days. Too long for us so we made smaller arrays as nothing on it was critical data.

Lots of missing (system) information, so no point asking for timescales.

Where is the fun in that? It's a guess the number of sweets in a jar question. You don't ask them to weigh the jar without the sweets, then with the sweets and divide the difference by the average weight of a gummy bear now do you?

I've never paid attention to the rebuild times and don't look after the main storage arrays but I'll put a guess in at 120 hours.

Completed today, less than 2 days - not too bad!
