Currently have an I5 4460 on an H81-plus motherboard (Asus). 16 gig DDR 3 and a Radeon Rx 470 Asus STRIX 4 gig. It's getting a bit tired now, what would be my best option CPU wise?

Mechwarrior Online and ConvertXtodvd mainly. Would a 4690 yield much performance increase or am I better off putting an I7 4770 or a Xeon in there?

I have about £300 surplus at the moment. I could also do Ryzen build or another combo but DDR4 ram is going to kill it price wise.

Help much appreciated.
 
A 4770k overclocked would give you a respectable bump in performance (if your mobo supports overclocking).

You're right DDR4 is very expensive right now. It's supposed to be coming down in price next year though. My plan is to buy AMD Zen 2 next year and finally retire my 2600k.
