Its been years since I last looked into this and after some sound advice elsewhere on the forum think it might be time to upgrade the trusty q6600/IP35 Pro combo and upgrade to a 2500k.

I'm after crossfire capability, at least 2 sata3 connections and a decent clocker and Z77 but other than that i'm kinda lost. There's a HUGE number of these z77 boards around which vary massively in price. It would be cool if it looked good too but what should i be looking at? Whats the 1155 equivalent of the IP35-Pro? :)

Do you already have the CPU?

If not lets get you sorted with a haswell build?

Not bought it yet. Was trying to keep the cost reasonable so was thinking 2nd hand 2500k and a board from the clearance lines.

I'd love to go haswell but I think the cost would exceed what I'm looking to spend

I would suggest the Asus Sabertooth board. Either 1155 or the new 1150 Haswell.

I love my Z77.

I'll check it out. :)

Not heard of running the 360 via a PC.

Could you not just buy a long ethernet cable and connect the 360 directly into our router ?

I had one cable fitted when I had the house rewired a year ago, would be a royal pain in the ass to fit another. TBH, Bar GTA5 I haven't touched it for months anyway.

asrock z77 fatality boards have 2 ethernet ports

Sweet, I'll check them out.

Initial Idea was to keep the spend below that of a PS4 and sell off the old bits so, £300ish. Might have to trim the buget even further as I fancy keeping the old stuff for my media PC in the lounge.

I was hoping to to be able to get a 2nd hand 2500k for £80/90ish and also some cheap RAM... Rest on a mobo. £200 total? Trying to keep the spend away from the wife's prying eyes this close to Xmas... :D

Your LGA 775 board specs look good, if your main PC is running ok just leave that where i is and use the budget to build a media PC up for your lounge.

I strung a LGA 1155 together for somebody a short while back. They wanted cheap as chips. Used second hand bits an kept it round £100. It was nothing to write home about but double that and I recon a i3 3220 with 4 gig RAM on a nice Asus mobo with on board graphics would do the job. All wrapped in a nice looking case sat in your lounge. £200 would buy all that.

I get where your coming from but the idea is to update the gaming rig to keep it well ahead of the PS$/XBox One front for the forseeable future :D

The media PC will be fine for the time being.

Right...

Been building my son a gaming rig, as and when the money comes available.

He is buying himself a new Gigabyte R9 280X, this alone is £250. Maybe your £200 total budget won't go very far these days...

If only we all had a big fat money pot...

You were thinking of a second gen 2500k. I would suggest a third gen i5 3570K. Married to a Z77 board. But that is all money too....
