11Ghz processor anyone?!

The mods may choose to move this as technicaly it's a news story. However, as it relates directly to microchip technology, I thought this may be a relevant thread to put it in.

Could be old to some of you, but I've only just come across the article. Makes for interesting reading.

Transistor clocked at 110Ghz!

The scientists seem to think they could potentially produce 11Ghz processors by using this manufacturing process in the transistors. Early days yet though and it's still not the long term answer to the dilemma of reaching threshold speeds in current silicon based microchips.

Yeah, well - my dad's got one even faster! He keeps it in the garage and won't let anyone else see it! :rolleyes: :p ;)


I would have thought that for any of these transistors to work, they would have carried out the testing under supercooled conditions (or at least very chilled). So in normal operating environments they may not be as impressive. Would still have to be faster than anything else currently around though.
