My brother has a samsung nc10 and we also have an asus eee pc in the house, both 10" screens, both quite decent netbooks.

I was after something just slightly bigger however, around 12-13" but most decent laptops in this range cost a lot more then netbooks.

I picked this up today (pic stolen but same unit):

dv2_1.jpg

HP Pavilion dv2-1115 (Gloss Black)
12.1" WXGA screen (1280x800)
AMD Athlon Neo (MV-40) 1.6GHz Processor
2GB Memory
250GB Hard Drive
ATI Radeon HD 3410
Webcam/Wifi/Bluetooth/HDMI
Windows Vista

I have removed Vista and all the junk it came pre-installed with, and just put on Windows 7 Ultimate 64.

It's running quite well. Feels a lot more like an actual laptop rather then a netbook, yet remains relatively light/small/slim. :) Has HDMI which connects straight to HD tvs for watching movies, I am quite sure this thing will run HD video files quite well.

I am gonna test out the ATI card in abit to see how it handles some light gaming. I managed to get the laptop, with a laptop case (will be selling this as its too big) plus a HDMI cable for just under £350! :D

so, it is 2nd handed?
review light gaming later... :)
7 Ultimate 64bit?
isn't it too "big" for cpu? how this cpu compares to 6600 for example?

ENJOY

Coming soon.

Win 7 64 seems to be running just fine with the standard 2GB ram that the laptop comes with. It's by no means a fast cpu but it feels much quicker then the intel atom used in the netbooks.

Installed firefox, antivirus, codecs, flash, office 07. Just have 1 driver to locate and install which didn't get installed with the win 7 installation then I will be ready to test out streetfighter 4 (if it runs) :p

isn't the AMD Neo MV-40 basically AMD's answer to the Atom?

based on that i'd call it a nice 12" netbook, not a laptop.

also, 12" laptops are so much more expensive than 12" netbooks because they're usually business-grade machines, and Ultraportables always carry a price-premium.

(i have a top-of-the-range 12" ThinkPad :D)

It definately is a netbook but feels more like an actual laptop when using.

Does anyone know if this model (dv2-1115ea) supports 4GB ram? There is currently one 2GB stick in there but doesn't appear to be a slot for a second ram stick unless I am not looking hard enough.

Also, under the battery there is a 'SIM' slot. Would that be for mobile broadband?

ya i seen it at the place advertising it as dual core... i sent a question about this, strangely it seems to be completely ignored and not gone onto the Q&A cos its single core afaik...

i have been looking at the HP DM3 13.3!

I considered that, looks like a nice little machine.

In the end though I decided against it due to the fact that it was a single core processor roughly equivalent to an Atom N280, but with higher power usage.

Looks like a very smart little machine though. What's the battery life like for you so far?

My friend has a netbook with similar specs to this, looks decent and a lot better than my generic N270+GMA950.

Hopefully the Windows 7 battery issue will be fixed soon as I get a heck of a lot longer battery life on my netbook with the XP install it came with but I prefer using Windows 7. :p
