12 months in Adelaide

Very interesting and surprising as well I must say. Thank you.

My pleasure. If you want to check out real estate prices, click here. Not much good news for immigrants, unless you're heading for the cheaper states (SA and TAS).

I last worked with Dicka

"Dicka"?!

( don't ask )

Oh, OK. :p

in 2006 so it will have been 2007 / 8 when he moved.

He had talked about it for a long time with his other half and I think he had family out there as well.

2006-07 was a good time to go; the exchange rate was very favourable. I took Mrs Evangelion to Australia for a holiday in 2006 and we were getting ~2.4 £ to the $, which made us feel like kings!

To give you some idea of how much things have changed: we bought our Aussie house in 2007 for $225,000 (equivalent to ~£93,750 at the time). I whacked down a substantial deposit, giving us a mortgage of $161,000 (~£67,000). Four years later, our mortgage is down to $157,000; that's ~£99,909 at the current exchange rate. Big difference!

We did well to get in at the right time.

Just to chime in...my youngest brother and his wife are moving to Adelaide in Jan...so a few more weeks and they will be in Aussie land themselves. My sis in law is a GP so has a 4 yr contract out there...my brother will look for a job out there but his expertise is in the food industry ie Management and operations etc...so dont know if he will find it easy to get a job out there but i suppose he will be living off his wife till he gets himself sorted out with a job.

All i know is that my sis in law will be making some very good money there, well she is a GP so i imagine they get paid pretty well out there.

Adelaide is still cheap compared to the other big states, and they sound like top shelf professionals, so they should be fine. Perth, Melbourne and Sydney are the tough nuts to crack (Brisbane too, though not so bad). You wouldn't get much change out of $600,000 for a very ordinary house in the inner Sydney suburbs these days.
