ok story is i have upgraded my system a bit and i bought a sapphire x1950pro 256mb for a £100, however it seems the memory is corrupt as it keeps black screen flashing and random colored dots on the screen.

I have tried upping the voltage via mb bios to the pcie slot and also on the rom on the card, still the same.

So im fed up with ATI as i have had 2 cards go down like this so im looking for an nvidia i think, just after some advice really, i play World of Warcraft a lot :)

my system spec is AMD x2 4200 @ 2.64, 1:1 OCUK DDR 2 RAM, 550w antec PSU.

i think the 7900 GS i can get for around £100 just wondering if theres any better performers out there ?

thanks in advance

james

I would try and get an X1950Pro as they are about £131 and you can also get 512MB Ram. I bought one last week for my HDTV PC and it is an amazing buy for the cost.

Can run anything @ 1360x768 with full details and little to no slowdown.

from what ive been reading tho, an Ichill 7900GS, pre clocked @ 550 - 1500

also most of them clock to 625 - 1700 as they arnt referance design, also i have grown to dislike ATI after my last 2 cards died :(

EDIT: also the card can be had for £107 i think

My 7900GS has overclocked from 450/1320 to 635/1700 and that's just what I run 24/7. When I get my new VGA cooler I will be pushing for 700/1800 stable. I can already get the core to 685 and the memory to 1860 stable but with high volts so I need some extra cooling :)

In my opinion the 7900GS is the best card for overclocking out there and when overclocked fully can just blow away anything in its price range.

id advise against a 79 series nvidia card, the failure rate on them is just too high.

Yes, they all seem a bit weak, especially once they've been overclocked.

Well I have a leadtek which are generally budget cards and it's absolutely fine. Apart from some issues with those 158 drivers yesterday (all sorted now apart from the cp not opening!) I haven't had a problem since I resolved my initial installation power problem.

Overclocks beautifully and I believe it's being CPU limited in most games at the moment. When I overclock my 6300 I'll see if there's a decent increase in lost coast fps.

A) Messing around with the voltages in the PCi-E slot do nothing, if anything its putting more stress on the card.

B) 2 cards going the same way? Sounds like something in your system is making them go if they worked for a while then broke the same way.

C) Messing around with the BIOS voltage really isn't very clever either... the black screen is core and artifacts/colored dots is memory and I very much doubt both have been buggered.

D) 7800/7900GS sucks, X1950 Pro kicks ass.

Not ATi's fault TBQFH. If it was nvidia you would be feeling the same way, so its either your system/you which broke them or you've been very unlucky and got two cards which have failed prematurely.

Get that E6300 overclocked buddy ;) shes waiting!!

As said any mid range x1950/7900 will serve you well, or maybe a second hand 7900GTO/GTX.

Have to get a P5N-E mobo first. Would have ordered it by now but parents offered to buy it for my b'day which means i have to wait til May 1st. Tempted to tell them delivery takes a while and get them to order it this week. Have it early next week and talk them into letting me have it early. They're sticklers for opening the present on the day though and I can't really afford to buy it myself atm. Well I can but that means I would be outta cash.. again.
