Building my first gaming PC sometime soon and hoping some kind souls could help me decide on parts :D

The monitor I have is http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-168-SA

I would prefer to go AMD because of the 3D monitor I have, but 3D comes secondary so if you think Nvidia would be that much better, then I am not totally against it.

I can go a little over £1200 if you think it is necessary. Although, if you would spend less for 1920x1080 gaming on that monitor, then I obviously don't mind spending less.

So if you had £1200 to spend on everything, other than monitor and mouse (have those), what would you get? (need os too)

Thanks in advance :)

As far as I know, Nvidia cards are better for 3D. I've got quite an expensive graphics card in there which you could lower down, otherwise I put a 128GB SSD for OS and a couple of games, and Ivy Bridge (much better than AMD for gaming). Case obviously variable, but this would do you well :) i'm sure there's a hole in this build somewhere (apart from going over budget a bit!)

I put the 3D kit from NVIDIA in there, I'm sure you could also go with the first Vision kit (which is £70 on overclockers).

I'd suggest (to lower price)
  • Lowering SSD capacity to 64GB
  • Different case
  • Different power supply (you could probably do fine with 500W)
  • Possibly cheaper RAM
  • I put 2TB HD in there for storage, you could certainly get rid of this if you have no media, or lower the size of it.

The GTX 670 is better than most of AMD's offerings and can also do 3D well too. I picked the 4GB one to make it 'super-future-proof', the 2GB version will also be fine. Another otion for the GPU is a 7950 3Gb. This is a little behind the 670, but only by a small amount. It will bring you on budget and has 3GB of VRam to play with.

The PSU supports SLI/Xfire, so does the motherboard.

I added a big CPU cooler, so you can overclock the 'dog's' off it. If you are not interested in this you can go for a cheaper cooler (still get good Oc ability): http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-001-GD

Also forgot a 3D vision kit.

Cut backs can be made on the spec, its just a nice guideline, to what id do. :)

Thanks for both of your suggestions, good base to go from :)

Only thing is with the Nvidia 3d vision kit is it won't work with the monitor I have as far as I know... It is AMD or no 3d I think. I am not massively fussed about the 3d though so if Nvidia is a lot better than AMD's offerings, then I don't mind doing that. From the reviews it seems fps ain't too much different, but people do say about better drivers with Nvidia?

What if I could get hold of as 7970 windforce for roughly the same price as the windforce 670? Whilst I would prefer to get everything at overclockers, there is too much of a price difference for the odd thing or two

Thanks for all the recommendations! What do you think of the following...

Not sure about the mobo and PSU yet, but looking around their price range. I have decided to stick with AMD over Nvidia GPU so that I can use the 3D on my monitor. Other than that, any changes anyone would make?

looks fine, might just want to confirm the psu has 6 and 8 pin pci-e power connectors for the graphics card.

cpu cooler has clearance in the case and size of the gfx card isn't an issue either from the specs i've seen.

First post so forgive mistakes.

I've only just upgraded my PC to the following specs:

Asus Sabertooth 990FX M/board
AMD Bulldozer FX-6 Six Core 6100 Black Edition CPU
OCZ 120Gb SSD Agility 3 (Used for Windows 7 only)
Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB SATA 6Gb/s HDD
Thermolabs Trinity CPU Cooler
16Gb Crucial Ballistix Tactical Tracer 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C8 1600MHz 2x Red/Green and 2x Blue/Orange

Kept from old system were:
Antec 902 Nine Hundred Two (V2) Gaming Case
750 Watt PSU
Gigabyte Windforce GTX560 Graphics Card
Alienware TactX Keyboard
Logitech G9x Laser Mouse

Had to replace side fan from a Akasa AK-183-L2B Amber Ultra Quiet 120mm Fan due to the height of the new CPU Cooler with a Scythe Kaze Jyuni 1200RPM Slipstream slim line version which is only 12mm high instead of the 25mm standard height fan.

Have just ordered a full set of BitFenix Cables for the rig will post pictures of before and after when I fit them.

Thanks, in the end I went with the following. Ideally would have liked a better cpu cooler and psu, but they seem okay and at least with the cooler it was only in the £20's so no problem upgrading that in a few months if I need too...

it will be fine, just make sure you have a bit of space to work in, decent lighting (+ a good torch if you have one), most of all take your time :).

and don't panic if it doesnt boot up first time, usually something obvious will have been missed or a connection not quite secure.

haha if you never said that I can imagine my reaction if it didn't turn on lol

Cheers, any problems and I will no doubt post about them on here asking for help and tips to stop my heart hurting :D
