Hello,

I posted in the General Hardware section but it didn't really go anywhere. Long story short, I'm building a fresh build as I sold my PC around 6 years ago. This basically means I've had to start from scratch, as my knowledge of components is now poor at best. Either way, I have a budget of around £1200 and it needs to include the following:

- CPU & Cooler (it needs to be quiet)
- Motherboard
- Memory
- Storage (only 1 drive as I'll use an external for storing media)
- GPU
- PSU
- Case
- Keyboard & Mouse (I have an old SteelSeries pad)
- Monitor
- Any extras such as fans, compounds etc

I've done a fair bit of research and come up with the following:

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £779.78
(includes shipping: £0.00)

I'm going to hold out for either a GTX 1070 or 1080, depending on reviews. Still completely undecided on the monitor. I did have a couple of queries that I can't seem to find a definitive answer on:

- RAM: 2400/2666/3200? 2666 seems to hit the sweet spot for performance/cost, all reviews indicate that 3200 will make no noticeable difference at all.
- Motherboard: Any better choices available? I'm not going to rule out overclocking but it's certainly not a key focus.

Your thoughts?

All looks good.

Just a few games will see a bit of difference, it seems. I forget the games. Maybe a Just Cause or a Far Cry among them but don't quote me. Personally I'd go with 2666 as well though, unless there was a cracking price on a 3000 kit. Speaking of which:

I used the budget Z170 Gigabye Gaming K3 to overclock a 6700K to 4.7GHz easy. Decent chip of course, but it shows you don't have to spend a lot on a board to get a good OC. It also has more red leds on the board, and you can set these to fixed, breathe/flash, or turn them off completely. It can't do SLI though, only CrossFire. It also has a 4-year warranty if you register it.

Thanks. I have changed the memory to the 3000MHz version in the deals of the week section. Same price as the 2666MHz one, so no complaints from me!

I really need the option for SLI as I may add a second card in the future. How about the Z170XP-SLI bundle instead? It's out of stock but I can wait.

Nice spot. Totally missed that one. :o

I'd say go for it. If you might overclock the CPU and the GPUs eventually, then I'd get a 750W PSU. Otherwise (if only CPU overclock) 650W will be fine.

Are you going to be playing Ashes of the Singularity? If so go for the i7.

I geneuinely don't even know what that is.

I'll be playing CS:GO, BF1, DoW3 and maybe DotA2.

EDIT: I used to play a lot of TA and that looks like a kind of successor?!
