Hi guy's

I've never been big on monitors and was always happy with my Asus VW202SR 20" that had a max of 1680x1050 and 75HZ.

Now I have a 7950 I was looking at maybe upgrading and would ideally like one that can go to 120HZ for FPS gaming and maybe 3D enabled for ATI.

I've not read anything about the ATI3D so am unsure whats specifically needed is it with or without glasses etc?

I can't seem to find any on the OCs store that are 120HZ and the ones I can are over £300 and are NVIDIA 3D ones.

Is there any 120HZ monitor for around £200? Maybe even with 3D enabled for ATI?

Also would I be better/cheaper getting an 3 monitor Eyefinity set up?

Hope you can help.

Cheers guys!

Hi there,

For playing games in 3D you really want a monitor that can support a 3D video signal of 1080p@60Hz (per eye). Because HDMI 1.4 can only support 3D signals up to 1080p@30Hz (per eye) or 720p@60Hz (per eye) due to bandwidth restrictions - then you need a monitor which does 3D via Displayport 1.2 to get the full 1080p@60Hz per eye output.

Unfortunately these monitors are rather expensive - this Samsung 23in 3D monitor for example will work with AMD 3D, but costs £390.

If you are more concerned with 120Hz "2D" and are willing to do without 3D, then you could go with one of the 120Hz monitors that use dual-link DVI. Monitors like the Benq XL2420T, ASUS VG236HE and Hanns.G HS233 are worth considering in this range.

As for eyefininity - I hear it is very nice, but personally I would rather go for a single large, high quality, high resolution monitor - like one of the 27in 2560x1440 IPS panel ones.

Cheers for the reply's guys.

I'd sooner have the 120HZ than the 3D so as long as it could do 120HZ in 2D I wouldn't mind. The 3D would be a bonus and mainly for Single player games.

The Benq one was the one I've been looking at but was a bit pricey and out of stock on OC, the ASUS one seems a good choice but prices seem to vary wildly with OC been one of the most expensive. The Hanns.G HS233 seems the best one but I'm unsure if it works with ATIs3D.

I can't seem to find many cheap enough with the IR for glasses built in. All seem to be over £350

I was looking at ATI's list of Recommended 3D Displays and again it seems difficult to find one with 120Hz and closer to £200 than 300.

Thanks for the reply's and the info I'll do a bit more searching.

Cheers guys.

Aye, exactly - the displays that work with AMD's 3D technology and deliver the full 1080p@60Hz (per eye) signal all cost more than £350. That's just the way it is unfortunately.

The HannsH HS233 is a 120Hz monitor that can only do 3D using Nvidia's technology - so it doesn't work in 3D with an AMD graphics card. However, it does work fine with an AMD card for "2D" 120Hz - and for this use it is one of the cheapest options currently available.

Also, the price of the ASUS VG236HE is rather high - at one point recently it was at just over £200, but alas no longer. However, you could go for a ASUS VG236H (the one with the Nvidia 3D kit bundled with the monitor) for under £300 and then sell the Nvidia 3D kit for ~£60. This would get you a nice 120Hz 1080p 23in monitor and cost you closer to £200 than £300.
