Hello again!

As the title says I am looking for a new gaming monitor. It will mainly be used for FPS-gaming like CSS and BF3.

I was first going to get the LG W2363D, but this monitor is not in production anymore. As I am Norwegian I am going to be buying the monitor from a Norwegian site. I was considering going around 23''-24'' in size. The 120hz monitors the site has in these sizes are:

  • Asus VG236HE (~ £269)
  • Samsung S23A750D (~ £325)
  • BenQ XL2410T (~ £410)
  • Alienware OPTX AW2310 (~ £463)
  • Samsung T23A750 (~ £558)

The Asus is indeed a lot cheaper, but from my understanding it's one of the better 120hz monitors out at the moment. The BenQ is probably the one with the least input lag, but will I notice any difference from for example the Asus? The BenQ just does not seem to have a lot of "great reviews", but was this because of an early bad batch?

I am not sure if there are some new 120hz monitors around the corner that more then likely will blow these out of the water?

Hope some of you can help me out.

Kind regards
Espen Andreassen :)

Tuff one this,

If your just using the screen for gaming then 120Hz has some plus points but TN panels leave an awful lot to be desired IMO and in no way justify a £250+ price tag.

Pro's

120hz gaming

Con's

Limited all round use
Low resolution
Not the best IQ
Graphics card requirements to reach 120 FPS. I Cant see you making use of 120hz in BF3 any time soon.

I spent ages looking into IPS vs 120Hz when I was in your boat.
I too use my Pc 99% for gaming so in the end I went and pre ordered the Samsung 750 120hz TN over the Dell 2410 IPS which was my other option.

Will the IPS have better viewing angles..yes, will the IPS have clearer/better colours almost certainly(however this is subjective to what degree)..yes. will the IPS be bettter for Professionals in photography/movies etc yes....

Will the 120hz be smoother for gaming..yes. Will it have better response times..yes, will is have less input lag..yes..Will is still be a very nice looking panel..yes.

120hz wins for me purely on the gaming side of thigns.

Gaming 2

I'm in the same position you're in.

I'd like a 120Hz monitor, but I don't know for sure if I can handle the low 1080p res and plus they all seem to be 23" screens, what's with tha lack of 24" :S

I'd probably wait until the Samsung monitors are out and there are some more reviews.

Is there no way you can ship the LG from another site?

I got the Asus 120hz for 3D and fast fps stuff and a Hazro 27" for the slower games.
How is the Asus, Arcane? :)

There are no shops in Norway that sell the LG W2363D anymore :(

So most people would recommend either the Asus or the Samsung? Anyone tested both? How is the input lag on them?

I also hear the new batch (and firmware) of the BenQ XL2410T is better then the early batches, anyone know more about this?

I have the benq, seems pretty decent to me, tho ive no other 120hz monitors to compair it too. its not a gloss panel, which is a good thing if your putting it somewhere where you will get reflextions.

the horizontal viewing angle is pretty reasonable aswell for general use. its not a terribad tn panel but a good tn panel :)

120hz no problem at all at the desktop, I did see your thread, it does seem to lead towards a duff cable. If you need me to check anything I'm happy to help. :)

Right so I got a new dual link cable and it's just the same??? do I need to change any setting in the control panel or somewhere else, is the monitor faulty? I had the LG 120hz a few month back and that ran no problem in 120hz. I don't need that 3D vision stuff installed do I.

Below is a picture I took of the monitor in 120hz mode.

Go to 'adjust desktop size & position' and make sure it's set to 'no scaling'. Are you absolutely positive your new cable is Dual Link not just 'DVI-D'?

Yeah already tried that, it's just the same. As for the cable yeah it says dual link on it just like the one that came with the monitor, real thick as well.

In device manager the monitor is showing up as generic PnP monitor, don't know if that has any relevance or not.

Hmm... It may be worth doing a clean sweep of the GPU drivers and then installing the latest ForceWare. I haven't tried running a 120Hz monitor on an Nvidia GPU for a very long time so I'm not sure if the 3D Vision drivers perhaps serve some sort of dual function (i.e. allowing 120Hz operating modes to work correctly under 2D).

While you are here PCM2, I was just wondering if you guys have got some more input on the BenQ XL2410T after the newer firmware (I think it's V005) and batches? It seems that most people are not recommending it because of early reviews, but I can't see any reviews after they updated the firmware etc. A guy from another forum said it was a much better monitor now.

Also, have you had the chance to compare the Samsung S23A950D (or S23A750D) to the BenQ XL2410T (and/or mabye the LG W2363D and/or Asus VG236HE)? Mainly based on their performance in 2D with 120hz.

The LG W2363D was my first choice, but now that it has been taken out of production is there any new upgraded versions coming out? Have you heard any news on other models coming out in the near future in the 23''-24'' department?

Thanks for all the help so far! :D

I have had a brief spell with the LG W2363D and the ASUS and I found them both quite capable monitors once set up. The out of the box performance of both of these models was poor but this was fairly easy to rectify. The ASUS was still left with a slight lack of depth to greens and quite pronounced gradients but overall put in a pleasing image performance. The LG had a pretty nicely balanced image - although the dithering and gradients weren't handled all that well and subtle shade variation was a little lacklustre. The responsiveness of both of these monitors was/is excellent and this really shouldn't be a problem.

I haven't used an XL2410T-B myself (or whatever the new revision is called - that makes it sound like a disease) but an esteemed colleague of mine who helped with the testing of our XL2410T has had a bit of experience with one. Now granted a sample of '2' monitors is hardly representitive but the new edition BenQ had much better contrast (which isn't saying much) and better out of the box performance than our test sample. Excess backlight bleed-through was still there but much less pronnounced than on our original test sample - mileage will vary but hopefully more of the new ones are like this. BenQ has also tweaked their AMA Overdrive a little on the newer models leading to less noticeable overdrive trailing. It is still there and my colleague did observe it during actual use but he considers this a good improvement over the old models.

I last requested one of the Samsung monitors about... an hour ago. But they just don't have any available yet. I will have to reserve judgement until I have spent some time with (most likely the S27A750D) myself. I may well acquire one through other means if Samsung can't provide one within the next month or so. ViewSonic are supposed to release the V3D245 shortly as well but I'm not sure exactly when this is due. Nothing else known is on the 23-24" 3D horizon.

Thanks for the very informative answer :)

From your experience with 120hz monitors, what would you recommend me? (With 2D FPS gaming in mind)

I guess I am stuck between the BenQ XL2410T, Asus VG236HE and Samsung S23A950D. I know you can't say anything on the Samsung as of yet, but what about the BenQ vs the Asus?
