Hi i have a samsung 2232bw 1680 x 1050 which is acouple of years old now.

I would like to move up to a 1920 res 22" -24" monitor.

Im stuck on weather to buy a 120hz or an ips.

As far as i know 120hz are on old tech panels (tn)

It will be used for gaming, obviously im looking for a good improvement over my old monitor.

I take it there is no news on a 120 ips panel?

I had a similar dilemma, in the end I went for the 120Hz since I do more gaming than anything else. Very happy with my choice so far.

If purely gaming then people will tell you 120hz for sure, especially competitive gaming.
If you use it for other things as well, like watching movies, photoshop work, as well as if you just do casual gaming, then I'd go for an IPS. The difference in quality between a TN and IPS is immense.

Just remember, to get the full benefit of the 120Hz monitor you need to have a top notch GPU to run the games you play at the higher frame rate.

i have a 5850 and im thinking of cross firing it,even if it doesnt reach 120fps, say around 90-100 , is it still a good benefit or does it need to be v syned 120 to work properly.

Thanks

Yeah, you'll still get the benefit at those framerates, don't turn on vsync, it introduces mouse lag and when you drop below 120fps, it will get choppy.

The only experience I have of an ips is my ipad, it is horrendous. The response time is horrible, I don't know if they make faster panels but going by that they're no good for gaming at all. IPS monitors tend to have far higher input lag as well.

I've tried 2 120hz monitors, the 23" lg and the 27" samsung 950, both have been awful. The 120hz was nice but both the panels were terrible in most other respects, they've been washed out and had bad uniformity. I may have just been unlucky but as a result I'm probably sticking with 60hz for my next monitor :D

Depends what sort of gaming you do - as mentioned if its anything really fast paced/competitive then there is no substitute to a 120Hz panel - if its slower paced stuff i.e. mmos then your better off with a decent IPS panel.

The iPad's screen, funnily enough, has no sort of grey to grey acceleration and aside from that is one of the slowest IPS screens you'll come across (slower than the Apple Cinema Display, at least perceptively). It is actually more sluggish than most VA panels I've used on non high-contrast transitions. There really is a world of difference between this screen and a modern overdriven IPS.

I'm going to stick my neck out here, but I've got the Samsung 2233rz 120hz 3D monitor, and a BenQ G2420HDBL monitor, ones 120hz one is not, "as you can guess"

I'm a big gamer but I have not noticed any diffrence between the two, and yes I have set it to 120hz, If there is a diffrence it's a very very small one.

So I'd rather have the IPS monitor for the better angles/

for fps gaming 120hz is better.
any other gaming a ips works well.

its down to preference for you, I use eyefinity 120hz gaming in BC2 and upcoming BF3.
the shift to 120hz allowed a smoother gaming for me and a better clarity.
getting old so need all the cool stuff top notch...
The difference is small, but you get a better clarity with 120hz.

For gaming I wouldn't consider anything other than 120hz.

In terms of viewing angles I just wonder what the hell people are doing for it be a major problem, are they playing driving games and leaning 3 feet to the side when cornering or something? OK maaaaybe with a multi-monitor setup you might get some kind of issue, or if you have your monitor mounted really high on a wall or something, but with a normal desk setup looking straight at the monitor the distortion at edges of the screen is surely minimal.
