Yeah I've read a few similar articles over the last month or so. Am interested in the higher refresh rates, mainly to allow gaming at >100fps with vsync ON!
Will be interesting to see what this year brings - but I'm kinda tempted to go widescreen just now! Might buy a cheapo 22" like the Belinia now, then see what the story is in 6-8 months time.
This is the best news I've heard all year. Well, so far...
Higher refresh rates are the only thing keeping me with CRTs. I hate enabling vsync, as there is a huge performance penalty involved and the constant jumps in framerates kills the illusion of reality. Nvidia don't seem to want to provide a working triple-buffer with their drivers either.
With a good quality CRT you can use refresh rates of >100Hz, at which point the effect of tearing is vastly reduced - barely even noticable. Every TFT I've seen so far has been 60Hz, at which tearing is annoying as hell.
This is actually a bit of a PITA, as I've only just got a TFT this xmas (and hence won't be buying a new monitor for a few years). I've asked around in the past if there were any plans for TFTs running at >75hz and never really got an answer.
Definitely a good thing as the poor refresh rate is one of my main issues with TFTs for gaming.
I wont be getting any new TFT's for years to come, however it doesn't really bother me as I play games at 60hz (vsync on) and I have never had any issues with it - but my PC has never been top spec either.
